Running a Derro Encounter

What are the Derro trying to do? Are they just protecting their territory or are they trying to rob the party? Are they out for blood or just looking to mug someone?

They are actually teleported to and trapped there on the island by a Mind Flayer Sorcerer (End Boss) and left to wander. (In Forgotten Realms Derro are creations by the Mind Flayers)

What does a Derro do when he's left to wander? kill randomly I'd say! There were more Derro to start with, but they killed some of their own out of boredom.

They should also do other things with their insane feelings of superiority ("delusions of grandeur").
Make sculptures. Construct elaborate tunnel mazes. Develop sophistocated poetry.

As they critique each other's work.... that's when they kill each other. Because obviously each one's opinion in the best.

Have them shout their poetry at the PC's, then demand to know which is best. Have them attack the PC's regardless of what they actually say.

It looks random, but it should actually have a twisted logic behind it so it makes sense to the Derro. Think about a really psychopathic rationale to determine their actions and plan accordingly...
 


Derro are insane but the scary thing is when the act normal.

1. Make the Derro walk around carrying boxes full of "something", ignoring the PCs, occasionally letting them know that some of the things fell out of the boxes while the Derro passed by...simply put, play mind games with the PCs for a while. Then make all the derro go a way and tell the PC that: "As the dust settles form all the hustle and hustle, you can see those things that were in the boxes all around you on the ground". (For you the DM, these are mines). Then the PCs just hear the echos of the derros snickering.
