Running games with unintended systems. . .

There's a big aprt of me that is really very fascinated with the idea of taking a setting and running it with a system that is nearly the polar opposite of that setting's default system by association. What do I mean?

Well, for example, I bought Burning Wheel Revised (a high lethality, low magic, system with an emphasis on social conflict) with eye toward running a 'gritty' Forgotten Realms campaign (something that I have found is somewhat hard to do with a low lethality, high magic, system that focuses mostly on epic combats).

Have you ever looked at a system and setting that were at odds with each other mechanically and thought "Hey! I bet these two things would rock together!" -- me? Hey, I wrote a recent Risus conversion for Cyradon (yes, the HARP/Rolemaster setting) ;)

I always wanted to do a mashup of like chose a setting or genre and a different system.
Not the exact same as your idea, but I like your idea.

In example back in HS when I first had this idea was playing in the Star Wars universe using DnD (2nd edition essentially back then first PHB, DMG, MM) so it would be a fantasy style SW.

I wanted to do a Star Wars remix in the style of the Matrix, but I didn't know a good system for it.

Try TINS (There is No Spoon) by Steve Darlington or Paladin (now available for free) from Clinton Nixon at Anvilwerks (CRNGames.com).

[Edit: The free edition of Paladin seems to have been pulled but it's essentially the same game that was released for pay a few years back. If you're interested, I'll ask Clinton if he can't dredge up a copy for you.]

I agree, Paladin would be perfect as a system - it encourages heroics and crazy stunts e.g. characters leaping over mighty rivers in a single bound.

Hmmm, does running Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, reset to WWII, with Spycraft 2.0 count? :)

I have run The Matchmakers from Dungeon #6 (!) with 7th Sea as well, and Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh with Call of Cthulhu.

Not right now, but I'll keep it in mind. When I do such a game I'm sure I want to do a LOT of consulting with boards first. I imagine some kind of Sci Fi's Greatest Hits with elements of Aliens, Cowboy Bebop, and 2001 as well. For now I've got to focus on the Great Hundred, TRAPs, and my own group. (BTW, did you get my e-mail re: Great Hundred? I think it might have some use to you)

I intend to run Eberron using Savage Worlds soon... They seem like they'd fit well, the mood of Eberron matches the implied mood of Savage Worlds pretty well.

Yes, yes, it does.

Ooo. . . any notes on this? I've recently picked up the DMG II specifically for Saltmarsh and my love of CoC (well, CoC 3rd Edition) knows no bounds (I own four copies of the rule book in NM condition).
