Running night-time combat

Hobs have 60'.

Any time the rogue hit with sneak attack, they exploded, as they only had 6 hp.

I don't think I rolled balance for the hobs and that is an oversight. Live and learn.

So, you think the gunfighter should have been grated cheese but the rogue could kill them all? Interesting. Thanks for your thoughts.

LOL, no I don't think the gunfighter level 4 should have been dead at once, I just thought he deserved it :D

Just a little pun cuz I hate those cowardly gunwielding smoke addicts ;)

Btw, how did he go down so fast? Lucky hits or bad AC?

Worse AC in the party (14), no con bonus, low HP rolls, and some lucky shots (I think I crit)

From what I remember, the only issue with this fight was clarity on how much moon was showing.

Once you establish that there was no light outside the campfire, here's it.

Low light allows sight w/in 40 feet of the campfire. Low light allows no vision any further away. Darkvision allows sight w/in 60 feet.

Low light vision is useless outside the campfire range, and balance checks if made should have major penalties. Darkvision negates any need for balance checks, as the characters can see perfectly fine.

By the sounds of it beyond that, the rogue in question did a good job of killing 'em off... though if there was as little light as you say, the hobbos should have made mincemeat of him. Inability to see at all means they should stand just outside low light range of the fire and then they can see 60 feet while he can't see them.

Low light should be good for something, so I gave him 5' vision.

Darkvision does not negate the need for balance checks, not if the reason is sloped uneaven terrain. Darkness should have just forced the character to move at half.

Hmm. Low light vision sees in starlight as well as humans do during the day? Darkvision is only superior inside of caves, otherwise there is nearly always light.

Can you support that with published rules?

Actually, low light vision sees in moonlight as well as humans do during the day, not starlight. See the spotting difficulty table posted above. They get +5 DC for moonlight, then -5 DC bonus for low light vision, cancelling them out. Or, +10 DC for starlight, then -5 DC bonus for low light vision.
