My group is gearing up for its final session of a series of Primetime Adventures games, which is just the kind of cooperative storytelling game that Ryan Dancey is talking about in his blog (unless I wildly misunderstand what he means). I found the approach hugely refreshing, inspiring and massively enjoyable as an alternative to D&D's more traditional approach. I'm not sure I would want to play that kind of game all the time, but as a change of pace every now and then, it is a damn fine idea. The tightness of focus ("this game is about hunting a dragon and nothing else") is a real treat, for example, as are the various mechanisms that allow players to directly buy into the story and guide its progression. Yes, you can do all of this already with D&D, of course. But you can also drive a nail into a piece of wood with a screwdriver if you have to. Sometimes a hammer just gets the job done better. I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with. I would have been less interested six months ago, but having tried this type of game out, I can honestly say it's worth a look.
