S3: The Scythe of Seto (Bront Judging)[Completed]

OOC: I've used the standard srd gnoll + skeleton monster entries below. Disregard this post if it is not correct. Forgot improved initiative, but Ogrin is first anyway.

Ogrin keeps his focus on the skeleton. "Hello, Boney. Care to dance?" As soon as the black king makes his move, Ogrins springs into action, charging his opponent. The blow bounces off the skeletons ribcage, and it reciprocates with a blow that the stalwart halfling easily deflects with his shield.

It might be that the halfling was overconfident, or perhaps it was just a stroke of bad luck. His next strike misses, while his boney opponents axe slices through clothes, armour and skin. Ogrin barely avoids a serious injury to his sword arm by retreating a few steps back to his own square. The halflings next attack is feeble, and the axe comes down again, cutting into his chest. His armor stops the the worst of the attack, but blood runs through the links of his chainmail. Again, he is pushed back a few steps towards the square the skeleton seeks to occupy.

A fury comes over the halfling, and he swings wildly at his opponent. A crack is heard, and pieces of the dog-like skeltons pelvis is broken loose. This does little to hinder it and the hyena-like creature slices a his miniscule opponent. Ogrin dodges the blow and lands another blow the the creatures rib cage which shatters. Boney reels from the blow and its attack misses by a mile. Ogrin takes advantage of the creatures lack of balance, and shatters its spine. Whatever magical force held it together is destroyed, and pieces of bone fly all over the square, then disappear. Ogrin bends to pick up a small, black pawn and returns to his own square, blood dripping down his arm and chest.

"They're tough as bones, they are."

Thanks, rln. I'm not asking you all to run your combats, though. I'm happy to run them in general. Both yours and Rae's were fabulous. Ogrin used his morningstar, I see. The pawn attacked Ogrin about 2 rounds after Razh finished off the minotaur, so he wasn't healed during Ogrin's battle. Now that it is White's turn again, Beamer can wait until the healing is completed before making his move. As Ogrin is not adjacent to either white healer, he cannot currently be healed, expcept by his own means. There may be other ways to help him, as well. The group has learned (as with Ogrin's alchemist fire), that they can pass items to each other.

The Black King's pawn has fallen, but his strategy is revealed, as Beamer is now in 'check' from the Black scorpion rook. The scorpion is one of the few black pieces that is not entirely black. It shines with a red sheen.

OOC: Sorry, I've been really busy and haven't had a chance to make a plan. If anyone else once to take control, that's cool, or otherwise I'll try to come up with something. I think the initial move should either be bishop to block or to move Beamer over out of threat.

"By putting the bishop in the way, we only stand to lose, not to gain. I doubt e'll stand his ground against that bug... but I have no better ideas either. If we do move 'im up, let's make sure he uses those wound-knitting spells on me before that... thing approaches. "

"Well, seems t'me we got four moves:

First, Beamer moves back and right. That's no good, it's delaying the inevitable, and when the scorpion comes in for the kill, we'll be in a worse position than before.

Second's moving the bishop to block. Sorry mate, but Ah don' think ye stand a chance against that thing. Best case scenario, Father 'Nonymous here softens him up before Ah finish him off. "
Rasereit shrugs apologetically at the White bishop. "An' even then, we're just gonna have a barrage from the last power pieces, one o' them the queen. How'd we get on the defensive ag'in? Blast...

Third is Beamer moving forward and right. That's no good, because this isn' normal chess. We'll be sendin' our king on a wild goose chase across the board, only he'll be the goose! Nope, no good.

And last, there's me. Ah can take the scorpion, no doubt. That opens li'l ol' me for attacks from all o' the last power pieces, if Ah'm t'protect the King here."
Rasereit sighs. "Ah hate takin' all the glory, Ah really do, but Ah think that may be the best move. After this fight, Father 'Non can heal me up for the next." Despite his words, Rasereit looks excited at having another battle with a giant arachnid.

Ogrin nods. "If you block the scorpions approach, it may give us some chance to move our forces -- such as yours truly -- ahead as well."

Beamer gestures to Razh, and the white queen moves up to defend the King.

The giant scorpion may be vermin, but its six legs begin clacking eagerly on the hard marble floor as its square and Razh's begin to glow to indicate that combat is to begin.

Razh is also ready. He's almost at full strength, and has already demonstrated that he's more than a match for several of the black pieces. But chess players consider the rook more powerful than the knight or bishop, so this may be the strongest opponent he's faced.

As the white marble below his feet glows, Rasereit feels a release 'click' in his mind. He knows that he can now act, to kill or be killed. His time is now. His opponent is 75 feet to his north.

No one has healed Ogrin, yet, as he's not adjacent to either healer.
