S3: The Scythe of Seto (Bront Judging)[Completed]

Queen vs Bishop

9:29 am Jareth's Temple

The White team makes its decision. Eusebius will fight. Beamer casts enlarge person on the monk. Then he casts Haste, as Eusebius casts Aid.

Beamer then orders Eusebius to attack the queen and the battle is on.
Round 1 9:29:12
Eusebius is first to move.

The giant Eusebius moves forward 5 feet. Though still 15 feet away from his enemy, his enlarged chain can reach her. He strikes out with uncanne speed. The queen proves quite quick as well, and dances out of the way of the chain.

The queen steps forward 5 feet (which doesn't draw an AoO does it?) and strikes quickly, snapping her barbed chain at Eusebius' legs twice. She catches his left leg on her return, splattering the cleric's red blood. (11 pts dmg)

Round 2 (I'll pause here for you to choose your action - or correct mine! :D )

Eusebius: 44/55 (incl 11 temp hps)
Ogrin 51

OOC: I'm updating the previous post (#480) with details of attacks, etc. The changes are in red.

A spiked chain normally has a reach of 10 feet. When enlarged, does it indeed have a reach of 20 feet, as SlagMortar suggested? If so, and if the Queen isn't size Large or doesn't have an abnormally long chain, then Eusebius could initially attack from where he is (20 feet away?) and then, when she moves into position to attack, which would have to be a move of 10 feet, he could make an AoO against her.

More to come but I have to get back to work now.

OOC: Since temporary hit points are lost first, and he had 11 temp hps to start with, that means that the 44 hp left do not include temp hps!

I may have gotten the maths wrong but I think he has better damage potential with the flurry of blows. And since she's moved inside his natural reach, that's what he'll do in round #2.

As the fight begins, Beamer says a short prayer to any gods who are listening. "Help the Father out."

OOC: Eusebius will have to do without Bull's Strength as Beamer can't cast it, though I think you've already taken that into account. This also subtracts 2 from Eusebius's trip check and disarm check.

On Reach:
An appropriately sized reach weapon doubles your natural reach. Large Eusebius has 10 ft natural reach so 20 ft with the spiked chain. However, after looking at the board again, it looks like there is nowhere Eusebius can 5 ft step to attack the queen can not 5 ft step to attack him back. That's basically due to the fact that reach weapons can attack diagonals. Sorry for the mistake!

On AC:
Beamer casts mage armor on Eusebius and himself every morning. Eusebius AC should be 3 higher (+4 for mage armor, but +1 overlaps with bracers). I'd assume it was around 8 am so it will expire at 2 pm.

Wow. Reach weapons can reach diagonally? I won't miss that complex rule in 4E. So are we OK so far? Battle proceeds? Feel free to make your own attack roles, Boddynock, or I"ll get a post in here before long.

OOC: I think medium size reach weapons in 4E can still attack an opponent one diagonal away. Of course, in 4E that's not an exception to the general rule for how to measure diagonal distances.

Go, go Father Eusebius!

OOC: OK, so having done some checking back through the thread, I see that the black queen is medium sized. Since Eusebius is 20 feet from her at the start, he'll simply make his (unsuccessful) attacks from his starting square. Then, if she wants to attack him, she'll have to move forward 10 feet, which means that she'll attract an AoO from him, which he'll duly make.

IC: As his opponent moves towards him, Eusebius sends the shining links of his spiked chain snaking out towards her. In his eagerness to engage the enemy, however, he swings wide, missing her completely.

The black queen retaliates, ripping into Eusebius flesh so that his blood sprinkles the marble on which he stands. The monk, however, is just getting started, so he launches into a ferocious flurry of kicks - head, torso, head - while holding his chain ready for further attacks.

OOC: Don't know if the first attack hits or not:
Scythe of Seto: Chess game; round #2 against the black queen; flurry of unarmed blows: (1d20+5=21, 1d8+2=4, 1d20+5=8, 1d8+2=3, 1d20+5=18, 1d8+2=6)

I think what Slag was saying is that if the queen takes a 5 foot step, her chain can still hit Brother E. even though she's officially 15 feet away, as reach weaopns can reach diagonally. I hate to get tied up on a technical issue such as this, but it's actually quite important in this particular battle.

OOC: Actually, it does because the Queen's second attack hit Eusebius, which would not have happened if the Queen had taken more than a 5 foot step.
Anyway, if Eusebius attacks from the center of his square, the queen is 3 diagonals away (20 feet). The queen can then step diagonal down and right and is 15 feet from Eusebius, but can attack because medium reach weapons can attack because there is only one square.
I suppose that Eusebius could have attacked and then take a 5 foot step away from the queen to open up some more distance and then she would have had to take more than a 5 foot step to get to Eusebius, but none of us really thought of that at the time. I think it is fair to say:
Eusebius is in the center of his square.
The queen is in the lower right corner of her square.
Eusebius has 11 damage - removing his temporary hit points.
The Queen has taken no further damage since her battle with the pawn.
It is Eusebius turn and he is making his flurry of blows attacks.
