How do you use material components?

I only use components when making magic items.

Other than that my players and I don't bookkeep components needed for spellcasting. HOWEVER, I'm considering that they need their wands (or holy symbols) as (arcane/divine) focus items. Rangers must have a talisman or medicine pouch (similar to Native American's) to cast. Bards must perform (could be a soft lullaby for a personal spell, or a concert-like performance for a major or mass spell).

Yeah, diseases are another thing we forget all the time. The rules for bull's rushes and overrun are yet another. :)

We've never used material components. We just handwave 'em, assuming that the party magic-user is assembling the necessary components for his spellcasting while in town.

I actually go beyond using the material components as written: emphasis IMC is put on creating new spells and alchemy, thus material components are emphasized even more than in the current rules.
