Alignment. As it stands now it is too restrictive and unrealistic.

It's changing to just a guideline, from what i understand. I hope that no spells will be tied to alignment, that's the main thing they need to do. Cut out any in-game requirements and it becomes as simple as your character's eye color.

Random-rolled attributes as well, though to illustrate how personal experiences differ, I don't know anyone who still uses them anyway. Everyone I know uses point-buy.

You have no idea how much I envy you. :(

Every time I join a campaign, it's roll for attributes. Every time somebody tells me about their character, they have at least two 18s, a 17, and a 16 gained from some totally crazy rolling method. "Well, we give everyone a free 18. For the rest of your attributes, you roll 4d6 and keep the 3 highest. Reroll ones and twos. Oh, and you can reroll your lowest attribute". It's mind boggling how often a DM with an attribute rolling system like that will nerf various feats and classes because they are "overpowered".

Me too, no more of this detect evil malarkey!

Ooooh, i HATE Detect Evil!!!! Sounds so great in theory, but it is the bane of DM's across the globe. The best i would give Detect Evil is detecting extraplanar creatures with an evil descriptor; Evil personified, if you will. Not evil as in "The LE barkeep who didn't pay his taxes and is cheating on his wife."

All of them if it makes for a better game. Aside from the fact that the game is called Dungeons & Dragons and it consists of a party of adventures and classes, I don't think anything should be "sacred". Make the best game possible. If people get upset, the hell with them. They can play something else.

It already is just a guideline, in terms of character behaviour. Tying it to so many spells and abilities, of course, does muddy the water.

LOL.

I will admit that my favourite character from the past was random-rolled. We did 4d6 drop the lowest, in order, so scores weren't ridiculous. I still wound up with an 18 and three 17's, plus a 14 and an 11. This was back in 1E days.

Ah, friendly attitude, how I love thee. :p

You of course realize that the direct reply to that would be that those who desperately want to change D&D into some other game should go and find that game on the big market of 30 years of game development, and leave D&D to those who actually love to play it, right? ;)

Now that those pleasantries have been exchanged, can we get back to a serious discussion? :)

Who said I wanted to change the game into something else? I'd advise you to read someone's post before putting words into someone's mouth. I meant don't let preconceived notions that something is sacred be kept just because people expect it.

First and foremost, they need to make D&D 4e the best game possible while still being D&D. I'm not saying gut the whole system and make it something else.

And just because my response was a bit brusque doesn't make me unfriendly. I've probably been playing D&D a lot longer then you have and I understand the repercussions of such changes. I'm simply saying make the game the best whatever it takes.
