Sage Advice: How much does the D&D Insider subscription cost?

It seems odd that you can play WOW for $15/month (a fully resolved persistent 3D game world)... and at the same time someone thinks $15/month for the DI is reasonable when that's only support tools for a separate game.

Now imagine you are running through WOW and suddenly you can't fight a monster because you didn't pay for it. You payed for the game and you are paying a monthly fee to play but, you didn't purchase the monster separately so you can't utilize it in game.

No, you can fight the monster, but it looks like this:

Considering that WoW has expansion packs, and that you cant use the material or go to the new areas, for the most part, unless you pay for it, I'm not sure the analogy works as well as you think it does.

No, your anology doesnt work so well.

You buy the basic game of WOW, it comes with everything you need to play the game. If you want to get higher level, or a new area, you just buy it in one price. There's not real "extra" fees for say, buying a mount, or buying into lvl 55. You technically are buying another game so to speak.

DDI? its a monthly fee. Except there's a book activation fee. And a graphics fee type to buy minis.

One is all inclusive in one go(WOW) you know you get everything in one purchase with each expansion. The other has a nickle and dime feel to it.

An expansion pack for WOW is a lot more like the Epic Level Handbook in D&D. You play the regular game but, if you want access to higher levels, new races and new abilities you have to get the expansion. If there was a flat fee to use all the minis in a certain book that would be fair. If I own the monster manual and pay a digital fee to see it online I shouldn't be charged a separate fee to use the creatures in it during my online game. I have spent thousands of dollars over the years on D&D products. I have never felt like I was getting ripped off until now.
