I think these foul sodas must rank up there with Billy Beer on the list of "beverages people bought with no intention of actually drinking."

Edit: I forget that there's yoots on this board, who have no idea what I'm talking about here.

When Jimmy Carter was elected President in 1976, his brother Billy became a minor celebrity. Billy was a serious good ol' boy, with a fondness for pickup trucks and barley pop. Someone came up with the idea of making a beer that Billy endorsed. It sold like hotcakes for a brief time, mostly for the novelty aspect. My understanding (I was like 12 at the time) was that the beer itself was awful.

An awful lot of people kept the cans (opened or unopened) in hopes that they'd be worth something someday (this was at the height of the beer-can-collecting fad, as well). My dad still has an unopened six-pack (that, itself, was a gag gift from a guy who worked for him).

While Jimmy was president, Billy became an even heavier drinker, and got into trouble for his dealings with the Libyan government (trouble which came to light during the 1980 presidential election, and certainly didn't help his brother at all).

""When you smell it, it's got that smoked salmon aroma," said Peter van Stolk, chief executive of Jones Soda."

I can't tell whether or not they're actually trying to get people to buy this.

It's clearly intended as a gag (pun intended). I guarantee you that most purchases of these are intended as joke gifts.

Jones Soda has been doing these grody sodas for several years now, and gets a lot of PR for it. I can also guarantee you that that PR is the biggest reason they do it...even if people don't want to buy Smoked Salmon Soda, they've now heard of Jones Soda.

Yep.

Real Jones Soda is among my favorites. Their Vanilla Soda is a joy to drink, but unfortunately I've never seen it outside of Canada. Other Jones Sodas are available (Starbucks has some sorta deal with them these days), but not the Vanilla Soda. :(

Our local Target has a large selection of Jones soda... not sure what flavors (other than Green Apple - as that's my favorite) they have, though...
