Samurai build: polearm master question

Tim Tuck

First Post
I'm running a third lvl dwarven fighter and just chose samurai for my sub-class. We rolled for stats and as it stands I have 18/16/17/8/14/9 down the line. At 4th lvl i plan to take polearm master as a feat. The question is, with that feat when someone enters your reach, you get an attack of opportunity on them. Is that capped at one per turn or is it for everyone that walks past? The plan is if i roll high initiative, use fighting spirit and move within 10 ft, hit spmeone then back out. That way anyone who cones close gets hit with an opportunity attack with advantage to start the encounter. At lvl 6 pair that with sentinel and i can stop enemies from advancing past me allowing my party to pick them off at a distance.

You only get one reaction per round, so that'll all you'll get to do it. It's great for controlling one enemy but not so much a crowd.

The only exceptions to this so far are (a) an 18th-level Cavalier (Xanathar's) and (b) the optional Mark rule (DMG p. 271).

An opportunity attack uses your reaction, and you only get one reaction per round.

(You might take a look at the cavalier though, IIRC they get the special ability to take one OA per turn.)

Edit: geez, ninja'd on a samurai thread...

Only at Lv. 18, though. So he'll be waiting a long, long time if his campaign even makes it that far.

Maybe he can talk his DM into including the optional Mark rule (DMG p. 271).

Well thats a downer, probably not worth using a feat for that if i can only do ot once per turn.

Still good against a single strong enemy. Also Polearm Master gives you an extra bonus-action attack every round with the butt end of your weapon. The feat is still very much worth it.

Now with action surge and extra attacks that come later, would i only be able to use the butt end once still?

Yes, just once per round even then. It works just like dual-wielding in that case.

It's still really good though, much better than actual dual-wielding since you're still mainly attacking with a 1d10 weapon.
