game towne
I used to shop at Game Towne for all my d20 needs. I have a bookcase full of D&D 3.0 supplements bought from them. I was there virtually every week, and spent well over a thousand dollars there.
But in my opinion the customer service at Game Towne is terrible. I got tired of being forced to present my drivers license every single time I bought something there, to the same clerk who had seen me dozens of times before, because 'those were the rules'.
The last straw for me was when I had picked out some d20 supplement and was reading it deciding whether to buy, and the store clerk told me that he was closing the store to go to the bathroom and could I wait in the back with the gamers? Of course, I was happy to. But then 2 minutes later he walked into the back where I was still reading the supplement, and told me he'd have to take it back from me until he returned.
Now, I've spent an insane amount of money at Game Towne. And they think I'm going to steal a 20 dollar game supplement?
At that point, I said 'here, I'm going to Game Empire', and handed him the book. And I've never looked back.
When I spend my money supporting a local game store, rather than saving a considerable amount of money by shopping at amazon.com, I expect, over time, to not be treated as a stranger. Perhaps I ask too much. Nevertheless, that is the price I charge for my patronage.
