[Savage Species] Survivor Prestige Class ...

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???

Let me compose myself.

Ok, this class has good intentions. You become tougher. As a 5 level prestige class, you gain evasion, uncanny dodge (dex bonus to AC, cannot be flanked), improved evasion, and damage reduction 5/-. All saves are good, no BAB progression.

Prerequisites?

Your highest base save bonus must be lower than your character level!

Holy crap!!! A 1st level commoner could take this prestige class at 2nd level!

Holy geez ... this looks easy to abuse ... who wouldnt want to take it? Sure, gaining no BAB sucks, low sp, d6 hit dice, and such, but the abilities are damn good.

Someone dropped the ball on this one. I'm not saying its bad, but it has a high probability of abuse.

I'm probably gonna ban it, but not without seeing how it actually works in game.

The funny thing is, characters who take 1 level in each class couldn't qualify for this class. :D

The prestige classes in Savage Species are intended for monster characters and not for the standard classes.

Even so, you know players will argue and whine for them.

And when you think about it, they should be able to take some of them. Emancipated Spawn could be used for a PC to play a skeleton or something.

The Survivor is generic. You may have to ban it if you don't want players to use it. YMMV.

EDIT: Removed reptitiveness.

I only hand my players cheese when they whine :)

The PC would have to be and intelligent undead created by another undead using it's create spawn ability. Check the requirements.

I could be generic but we are reading from a book for monster characters. The intro states they are monster prestige classes.

Ok, when I speak I don't speak with full authority of the rules, as I got the book today.

That class disgusted my inner child.

On a more humorous note, if a commoner took this prestige class, that cat would be toast :D

Abusive?

Wow. Of all the classes to pick as being subject to abuse that is about the last one I would have thought of.

A commoner might be able to take it at second level, but no PC class can get into it before 6th and multiclassing only makes it harder.

So supposing Joe the fighter starts taking this class at 6th level and finishes at 10th. Fred the fighter is a straight 10th level fighter.

<table cellpadding=2 border=2><body><font size="2" color="#ffffcc"><tr><td>Name</td><td>Joe</td><td>Fred</td></tr>
<tr><td>BAB</td><td>+5</td><td>+10/+5</td></tr>
<tr><td>HP</td><td>50</td><td>60</td></tr>
<tr><td>Fort</td><td>+8</td><td>+7</td></tr>
<tr><td>Ref</td><td>+5</td><td>+3</td></tr>
<tr><td>Will</td><td>+5</td><td>+3</td></tr>
</font></body></table>

The 5/- Damage reduction will more than make up for Joes inferior HPs. His saves are 1 to 2 points better and he had uncanny dodge and improved evasion. Fred had twice his base attack, and an itterative attack. I'm actually betting on Fred if they fight.

So Joe is a 10th level fighter with the BAB of a wizard, the Uncanny Dodge of a 5th level barbarian and the improved evasion of a 9th level monk.

It's a cool class, but abusive it ain't. Without the damage reduction it would be unjusitifiably weak.

Just out of curiosity are we sure it gets no BAB? I mean the Halfling Outrider has no BAB and then we were told it was supposed to be that way, until they errated it.

I would go further and say that this isn't even really good as a PC monster prestige class. It is more likely to be used by the GM who wants to make his monster NPC a bit more survivable in combat without making his actual attacks too tough. Unfortunately, I think this should have been done as a temple, rather than as a prestige class. As a template, it works fine!

Balsamic Dragon

Under BAB bonus, everything in the column says +0, and the example character they give supports that. Class abilities, three good saves, no BAB
