[Savage Tide] "Damn You Drevoraz! DAMN YOU!"

So, it's a funny little story here, for anyone that's running the Savage Tide arc and doesn't mind a SPOILER or two.

****SPOILER ALERT****

So, our group makes their way to intercept the half-orc Drevoraz, before he slays Lavinia, at the end of "The Bullywug Gambit". The group had a hard time of the mansion, suffering heavy damage (a near TPK, were it not for the two NPCs pulling their weight) before killing Chief Lorpth. In fact, the little Rust monster was able to eat much of the AC monkey's armour, much to his chagrin!

Afterwards (and after a new addition to the group, a human paladin who ROCKS), the group just plowed through encounters - the huntress and her guard were killed in two rounds, and so on - the group made their way to Drevoraz.

They had a note given them by the captain, and thanks to some amazing dice rolls (I gave the main negotiator a +4 bonus from successful aid another rolls, plus he had a charisma buff in effect, plus a +2 from the note, plus another bonus from the Dragon Shaman's aura_ and he rolled a 41 on his diplomacy check!

The group was able to convince Drevoraz to back down, so, as scripted in the adventure, the bullywug cleric started his attack, and Drevoraz fled. The group plowed through the cleric in a round or two (I was a little amazed).

Then I did something stupid. I said something like "Man, it's too bad he got away. Do you want me to tell you the treasure you missed?".

The group was already considering chasing the half-orc, but that was the clincher.

We had the best hour or so session afterwards, as the group was fanning out to hunt down the Half-Orc during the Wormfall festival. He was weaving through crowds, pushing them out of the way, and sniping at PCs as they made their way towards him. The encounter finished on Ancestor Island, right near the tomb of Sasserine (and I was winging it - I had no idea we'd end up there!) as the sun set. It was an incredible encounter that just blew our minds.

The great thing about it, though, was the fact that even though the PCs were able to talk their way out of a fight, they didn't take the easy way out. They fought. This, despite the fact that they had suffered heavy damage in the fight with the Chief. i think they were just heady, considering the last few victories they had.

All in all, it was a cool encounter. Anyone else have stories about the Bullywug's in Lavinia's manor? I think the fight with the Chief and Chunkus is probably the toughest one we've run yet. The final fight with Drevoraz was very easy, but that makes sense, considering our circumstances. The fight with the huntress was also laughably easy, but that was luck on the PC's side.

Hey Wik,

Im running a group through the bullywug gambit right now and the PCs are about to assault the Vanderboren Manor in hopes of saving Lavinia. As I read through the adventure I thought that the chief / rust monster encounter was a bit intense, but im hoping that they pull through / make some good knowledge checks and maybe toss a piece of metal at Chunkus so he'll leave them alone for a bit (as scripted in the module).

My party also managed to score a note from Captain Harliss Javell, with one smooth talking future-scarlet corsair PC able to convince her that they were on the same side. Im hoping they just fight Drevoraz, but who knows, I could have the same situation as you.

So far, the hardest encounter they have faced so far was Ripclaw in the hanging silk room at Kraken's Cove...he pounced on the halfling rogue and nearly ate him for breakfast.

Ripclaw was almost a TPK for us, too - Until Chief Lorpth, he was the toughest encounter. The group got rid of him with a Cause Fear Spell... it wasn't until after the session was over that I realized Ripclaw was immune.

All in all, I'm really loving the Savage Tide arc, especially now that I'm more able to break fromt he scripted encounters and embrace "on the fly" adventures. In fact, the whole next session is going to be unplanned; I'm really looking forward to just flying by the seat of my pants (so much fun!)
