Savage Worlds - Our First Game

Overall, a thorough post.

Slight expansion:
The patient's number of wounds (cannot exceed 3) always applies a penalty on the Healing roll. No matter how much Nerves o' Steel the patient has, or other ways to avoid wound penalties, the severity of the wounds hinders the Healing roll.
So a doctor with Improved Nerves o' Steel and 3 wounds treating himself makes a Healing roll (TN 4) at a -4 (3 wounds, 1 wound penalty to all Trait rolls).

I almost added that (having seen that question on PEG's boards recently), but had to go to work (stupid work interfering with my Savaging). Thanks for completing the material.

I've Got My Stuff

Well after a few stuff-ups and long delays I finally have my Savage Worlds books.

Our group brought sev copies of SW Explorer's Ed, a couple of Deadlands Player's Guides, Marshall HB, The Flood, DM Screen, SW Fantasy Companion & Weird Wars II core book.

I must say one thing...WOW! I haven't been this excited reading RP books since, well, not sure, probably 1E AD&D, or maybe 3E, or maybe Star Wars Saga edition (and 4E at first, though the initial Players books aren't much to read). Anyway, all that for another time. The books are of a much higher 'production' quality than I was expecting. They are fantastic and I will certainly be lashing out on more Savage Settings simple for the joy of devouring. (Recommendations???)

I would like to thank all of you that have answered Q's re the rules whilst I waited for these books.

Secondly I would like to thank the guys at Studio 2 Publishing, who handle the orders SW. They have been amazing, maintaining contact throughout the delays and threw in several freebies to compensate, and apparently, b/c we put in such a large order for all the way Down Under. Awesome guys and I will certainly order directly through you guys in the future :)

I read the Core Book (barring every power and monster description), a bit of the fantasy companion and most of Weird Wars (again barring most stats) in two nights. I am at work now and blame you Savages for being tired right now...ooh, but it is lunch. Gotta go...and read some more.

Yeah, I am really impressed with Savage Worlds. It is becoming my default game for non-supers gaming and I am thinking about putting up much of my d20 Modern and Future stuff for trade (possibly most of my 3e D&D stuff as well).

Have you been to PEG's forums? I started a thread there that collects the design insights, optional rules and general advice of Clint Black, the Brand mangager. Some of the things include: a new combat maneuver, using a garrote, setting adjustments for incapacitation and illusions as trappings.

I'd also recommend the free Modern Martial Arts by Clint Black if you don't have it.

Daring Tales, Daring Tales of the Space Lanes, and Daring Tales of the Sprawl by Triple Ace Games (these are free on their website).

Thrilling Tales 2e from Adamant Games. If you want to do pulp, this is the book.

Thanks Greg. I have been on the PEG boards. I haven't had a long look though. I will definitely check out your thread and thanks for those other links & refs.

Love the Monte quotes in your sig. His writing was a great influence on the way I DM. Wonder what he is up to now. WOuld love to see him write some Savage Worlds stuff :)

Glad to be of help

I wouldn't mind seeing Monte do some stuff, but my top choices would be the following:

1. Steve Kenson: My favorite rpg designer. I love his stuff for D&D 3e whether for Green Ronin or Dragon Magazine and his work on Shadowrun. He also designed two of my three favorite rgs- True20 (which would have been my non-supers game of choice if not for Savage Worlds) and Mutants and Masterminds 2e.

2. Charles "Vigilance" Rice. His Blood and [x] stuff for d20Modern was fantastic and, in my opinion, put the official d20Modern and Future stuff to shame. I'd love to see what he would do for Savage Worlds. I would also love to see his Blood and [X] stuff done for Savage Worlds.

3. Michael "Talien" Tresca: He did Blood and Blades: A Profiler's Guide to Slashers for RPGObjects. It's a book of horror movie characters like Chucky, Freddy, Jason, Michael, Leatherface, Sil from Species and the Tall Man from Phantasm done for d20Modern with the serial numbers filed off. He also writes a column regarding monsters based off the types of movies found on Sci Fi Channel movies (e.g, Frankenfish, Sharktopus). I would love to see him do this stuff for Savage Worlds.

4. Ari "Mouseferatu" Marmell

But he does write for Savage Worlds! Since you can convert so easily, everything he writes is available for SW. We just started a Ptolus campaign - guns + D&D never worked for me. Guns and SW is sweetness.

So pull out the Banewarrens or sign up for Dungeon a Day. Monte is right there with you.

Too right AmerigoV, too right. We are keeping a lot of our old dnd campaign but converting the core rules and PCs to SW. Should be interesting. Still keeping most of the conceits and story of 4E, inc monster origin etc.

Also have noted how easy it is to use 4E monsters, including the powers. Rechargable powers seem to suit SW to a tea, and it is good to get some the move the minis around powers (something SW lacks).

I'm with you there on the 4e monsters to SW - very easy. I tend to look at 4e first if I need to convert a fantasy monster that is not in my other material, if I bother to look at all now.
