Save the Goblin, Kill your Friend?

They need to work together as players, not as characters.
Which was my meaning. That's why it's in the metagaming portion of my post.

And when Technik4 and the DM created a character whose goals directly conflicted with the party, you have exactly what is not players working together. See the problem?

Yep! :)

I meant to say that instead of killing his PC they should have stopped the game to talk to each other about what as going on.

To be a little more accurate: When I designed the character the party consisted of a CN Warlock who seemed like he didn't care about the church one way or another and a NE Scout who was all for actively working with the church if they were the higher bidder (As well as a short-lived spike-chain wielding half-ogre, who only played 1 session). Of course, the Scout has since dropped out and the Warlock has decided he is, in fact, very anti-church and will probably move his character into CG-land eventually.

I wasn't seeking to actively create a character with goals directly opposing the party - I was seeking to make a character with an interesting background that could directly influence the plot of the game. Of course then we were joined by a combat rogue whip-wielder, who seems to be out for himself, perhaps thrown in anti-church due to the fact that he is being paid by someone who is anti-church to do some jobs. And then, the night of the session an acid-throwing factotum and a tiefling psion.
