Scare them into submitting

In my D&D3 games, I added a morale stat to monsters using the basic d20 mechanic. Cowardly critters got a 10, brave critters got a 15, and fanatical critters got a 20.

I'd roll a d20 against the morale stat whenever it seemed appropriate to check in a battle. I didn't bother with any kind of set battle milestones because I'd never remember to check at the right time. I'd just roll when something like this happened:

"Holy crap! The PC fighter just killed 4 orcs with a Great Cleave!"

"Wow! Crit for 42 points of damage!"

"Oh yeah! The party wizard just polymorphed the PC barbarian into a rampaging troll!"
