Scarred Land discussion/debate: Slacerians and Ratmen

Nightfall

Sage of the Scarred Lands
Well since there's now an FR debate going on, I figured, it's only fair we have our own. Anyway to help kick this off, I figured I'd start off with a popular idea of mine, the origins of the Slacerians.

While we can discuss the merits of whether the race was all psionic or just had a large population of them, I DO think it's interesting to consider this about the Scarred Lands.

1. There's no visible psionic talents in this place.

2. The largest psionic race and one of the more popular D&D types, Illithids, are largely non-existant and/or very well hidden from any know sources. (At least in Ghelspad.)

3. The Slacerians appear to have existed before the coming of the titans as well as the gods.

Now what this has to do with the price of tea in China is this:

Perhaps THIS is actually where the dreaded Mind Flayers hail from. A kind of Eden where they were exposed to some of the more sinster aspects of the Slacerian nature, especially this regard to their own superioty. Think about it. The Slacerians didn't have anything to hurt them or make them fear, other than themselves. Thus it's very likely they created the Illithids as kind man servant and/or status symbol. Perhaps that's also why the Mind Flayers, though religious in some degree, don't hold well with clerics or druids. They see them as either charaltans or perhaps just pretenders to their powers.

So give you comments folks. I'd be happy to discuss them with you.

Debate 2.

Slitheren/Ratmen, are they really becoming a society or merely imitating it? If they are becoming a society, it's certainly looks like it will be one to challenge the divine races, especially given their fecundity. If they are imitating it, perhaps there might be way to alter their thinking, perhaps by sending out converts. Who can say though? Myself, I do think they might be becoming a society and thus perhaps, a new kind of race that will dominate both above and below ground. Thoughts comments and other debates are welcomed.

Slacerians... I love stuff like this. Mysterious ancient races who may have been the threat that engulfed the world. Hints at their return, exploring ancient ruins, etc... I'm mentioned elsewhere that they were the rules of ancient Bluffside before the Titans and Gods destroyed it with a comet. I've also decided that they are nemesis to the psionic race from Dragon. The one where each psion specialist was a different faction? Can't remember. Mind Lords of Talrakon or something.

Ratmen? Well, I haven't read my warrens book in a while but there are definately a tip of the hat or two to the Skaven! Haven't used these yet but plan on doing so soon.

There's a book on the Slitheren? I have to find it! I think the Slitheren rock.

Slitheren and Kobolds. Do you really Need more?

Xarlen,

Yep Vigil Watch: Warrens of the Ratmen, has a GREAT bit of details about the various subraces of ratmen along with detailed info on their present camping ground, The Mourning Marches. Course they aren't the ONLY ones there but they are a strong force in that area. Doesn't mean they don't talk about places where you can find other ratmen/Slitheren races.

Joe, I know which one Issue of Dragon you're talking about. (281 for those that want to know.) They and the Illithids were enemies. I think they'd make great adversaries against the Slacerians. In any case some interesting points. I think maybe they fled to Bluffside perhaps. I don't know. I only visit the city. ;)

Fear the 'Wug!

Actually from what I've read, I'm a fan of the Slitheren as well. :)

My new character (a halfling Shaman--from Green Ronin's Shaman's Handbook) is from the Mourning Marsh. In his background, the bulk of his tribe was slaughtered by the nasty vermin.

I'm looking to get the Warrens of the Ratmen, but BoEM2 just came out......ah, heck. Maybe I'll get both.

;)

Get both. You'll be happy you did. I know I'm VERY happy with my purchase of Warrens. Though I will add this. Wilderness and Wastelands is a GREAT Dm's Tool. Not a perfert one but DEFINATELY a great tool that helps in running wilderness encounters, random or otherwise. It also has a nice table for random encounters in the Mourning Marshes. Let me say right now, it's VERY nasty but I LOVE it! :)

I don't think we can be certain of when the Slarecians arose. Were they present before the gods? Almost certainly. The titans? Well, we don't really know. The Scarred Lands doesn't have a creation myth. I think most people assume that the titans did not create the world because they are fundamentally a part of the world. Similarly, the gods couldn't have created it. So was it the Slarecians? Well this is just another mystery. Remember that if they existed beforehand, the Slarecians went unnoticed until the Epoch of Gormoth. It also seems odd that they would have enough power to create the world, and yet lose to the titans who they, in essence, created.

As to their psionic nature, well, wait for RR2. I covered it adequately, if succinctly, in the Psionics chapter.

Well, that's enough rambling. Any other ideas on the subject?
