[school] If I needed to decide what Network Operating System to use where would I go

As much as I would like to believe that an Apple server could work in the business world, I think selling it to the execs would be a different matter entirely. Plus, there's the issue of finding someone to support it. I mean, I suspect if I did a Monster.com search for "apple server" I'd find very little of it.

Holy thread resurrection!

That's a trick question. The answer is: whatever you're most comfortable supporting. If you know Windows, then a windows server is best for you. If you know linux, unix, solaris, openBSD, mac os or whatever, use that. It takes so much more time and effort to support a system that you don't know inside and out, that you may as well just use the one you know, because at least you can fix it fast.

That's a loaded question. I have had good success with Novell in terms of pure stability. Scalability, you can always add more Novell servers. Microsoft is okay, the hardware needed can be fairly steep. I always think what I need and add a little more.

The better question is what you are using your NOS for. For file and print server, I like Novell. I use Linux for most server tasks (web servers, email, and collaboration). Windows is good for SQL Server and other non Linux software.

Heh... I was wondering when you would show up. :D

Anyhow, I know him and have not been able to have him 'try the kool-aid'... not even a sip! ;)

I drank the kool-aid and it is goooooood. OS X is a great OS.

However, for a company, I'd also have to look close to see what their business needs are before recommending an OS (without my personal bias included). Well, that's unless I was running the ship by myself, then I'd select what I'm comfortable with.
