Before describing any room to the players, always ask "who is the first person to enter the room?" and then do your best to describe the room from their unique point of view.

The room beyond the door is completely dark. You squint your dwarven eyes and peer inside, and you see statue standing in the corner almost sixty feet away. It looks a little fuzzy from this distance, and even though your darkvision is in black-and-white, you can tell this statue is streaked with color--probably mold or rust. The floor in front of the statue looks strange too, as if the flagstones there were recently disturbed or cleaned.

Keep doing this, and I bet your players will be clamoring to be first into every room so that they can "see" things through their character's eyes.
