Sci-Fi Shows Set to Dominate Fox's Fall Lineup

Boldly Going Nowhere: From the creators of the under-repped comedy team behind It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, this show follows the misadventures of a space crew -- sort of a campy take on Star Trek. Shooting for the pilot is set to begin in October.

I got a Red Dwarf vibe off that description.

Of all these, Fringe sounds the most interesting to me, perhaps Dollhouse too... The description gives me hope, but also worries.

How many last more than one season?

How many last the whole season?

How many last more than a month?

Anyway, I have to say they all sound pretty unoriginal.

Virtuality - someone was either watching the BTL episode of Red Dwarf, or the Holodeck episodes of ST:TNG. Frankly, the holodeck was the worst part of that show, I can't imagine it lasting very long.

Fringe - Besides the ones like the X-files and Supernatural and Kolchak, you had Special Unit 2 (where it was a special police unit) and things like Poltergeist the Legacy and Psi-Factor, where it was a private organization. And then Sci-Fi had one I kinda liked where it was a tabloid (that ended on a cliffhanger, too)

Dollhouse - Alias, Le Femme Nikita with a dash of Bionic woman.

Boldly Going Nowhere - A bit more orignal, but considering how long Quark and Homeboys from Outer Space lasted, I bet this will be the first dropped. You could compare it to Red Dwarf, but that wasn't really campy (like Quark or Homeboys)

Virtuality - I'm kinda getting tired of the dark scifi trend that people like Ron Moore and David Eick have been pushing on us in recent years. Sure it can pay dividends (i.e BSG), but it can also bomb horribly (i.e. Bionic Woman). Less angst and more wonder please.

Fringe - I'd be hyped up for this, if not for the name JJ Abrams. For the record, I think he's hugely overrated and his shtick (long meandering storylines and aggressive viral marketing) is getting tiresome.

Dollhouse - Like Abrams, I find Whedon to be a bit overrated as well, but I do think he makes good stuff. Here's hoping his newest show lasts a full season.

Boldly Going Nowhere - Meh. A pure scifi comedy? A one time deal I can stand (Galaxy Quest), but a full series? Think I'll skip this one.

All in all, an interesting lineup of shows. But I don't think any of them are going to woo me away from Doctor Who anytime soon. :)

Based upon my experience and the Fox network, those numbers will be inversely proportional to how much I like the shows.

Well, that isn't an issue of genre shows, but of TV shows in general. Last I heard the statistics, less than half of all new shows make it into their second season.

Damn, still no definite info about whether Terminator will be back. Although its very lack of mention doesn't bode well. :(

According to Wikipedia, they've given the go to look for directors for the first three Season 2 episodes but no official word as to whether or not the show is cancelled has been forthcomng.

Sigh. FOX. I'll take everything they make with a grain of salt, because they'll move these shows three times in four episodes, then declare it 'never found it's audience' and cancel it. You would have thought Whedon would have learned after the way they treated Firefly; I'm surprised he'd develop another show for FOX.

FOX! Why did it have to be FOX! they were good when they went against the norm and showed shows during the summer but now they don't give new shows a chance these days. Their record is bad, showing shows out of order, moving them without notice, or just dropping them! :]
