Scope of d20 Modern?

What exactly is the scope and purpose of d20 Modern? Is it supposed to be the core rulebook for all non-fantasy d20 RPGs in present or future time? Will it be a core rulebook for Gamma World or Traveller? Any other games? Can it be a stand-alone game?

first of all, it is a fantasy game, and i think it's meant to be a core rulebook. it gives examples of a couple different settings, which, i'm sure, will have Campaign Setting books of their own

It is by statement of Charles Ryan, WotC Developer, meant for modern and near-future roleplay. It could be modified to handle earlier or later times, but its main focus is (I would guess) From the 1970's onward, to the late 2000's.

Mr. Fidgit, I disagree: It can be used to play fantasy, but works just fine with every other genre imaginable (IMHO). I think that henry's pretty much got it. And no, It has no connection to traveler, as I think that Traveler was out before it (I may be horribly wrong, not sure if it's even out. :) ).

The next generation of the d20 system! :D I'm looking forward to modifying it slightly to work as a lower magic and more generic ruleset for fantasy.

i agree with you, but i just wanted johnsemlak to know that d20 Modern isn't a non-fantasy game. there are too many monsters, spells, psionic abilities and magic items for that :D

Although most systems can be tweaked to be whatever you want, did you really mean to say late 2000's (eg. 2999) or closer to 2099? Having not gotten the book, but reading what people are posting, i would *guess* the latter...

Well, there is no future stuff in the book. Everything I saw in there, besides magic and psionics, exists today. However, I think will a little DM creativity and perhaps some future suppliments a future campaign would be really easy. Just like with some research I think d20 modern could work really well for the 1700's.

OK, I understand a bit better.

My understanding is it can be a magic or a non-magic RPG. Also, it is not a futuristic RPG, along the lines of Starwars d20 or Traveller.

OK, will it be a core rulebook for Gamma World d20, or any other games?
