Scourge of Worlds

No, I'm not talking about Meg Hal, but the DVD that came in the latest Dragon.

I don't know, maybe there is already a thread on this, but I always seem to get my Dragons later than everyone else.

I thought it was pretty neat. If you haven't seen it, it's an interactive DVD where you control the actions of Mialee, Regdar, and Lidda as they work with a cleric who is on a quest.

At various times in the DVD, it prompts for a user response. "Go to Greyhawk, go to DarkHaven?" And then the DVD proceeds forward based on your response.

I thought it was actually pretty neat. I hated waiting through the whole intro screen every time I wanted to try a new scenario, but I could see getting a lot of use out of something like this. Good way to introduce RPGs to kids, too.

I thought there was too much ROLEPLAYING and not enough ROLL-PLAYING. (If anyone needs me to explain that clever play on words, please e-mail me privately.)

That's a problem? I mean, it's intended to be a movie after all. And I really liked the personalities of the characters. I especially liked the way Lidda was portrayed.

Probably hard to say, since the DVD only presents about 4 choices. In it, the party catches up to a Cleric that was once an old friend of Regdars. In it, I could never quite understand what it was the cleric was attempting to accomplish, but he worshipped Pholtus, and they talked about the city of Greyhawk, and DarkHaven.

In the movie, Mialee casts a few spells, including magic missile, and sleep. The cleric heals, and a druid (that opposes our heros) summons some earth elementals.

I was makin' a joke. :) Actually I thought it was cool that there was so much dialogue in it, as well as non-combat types of encounters (the barbarians in the tavern, for example).

Ok, phew! I never pecked you as a big roll-player. :)

The Barbarian scene was good. I need to go back and use Lidda's idea and see what happens. I only tried Regdars.

For some reason the CGI seemed odd to me at first, just a little off. Now I think it is that the character's mouths do not seem to move realistically. I wonder if the actors read their parts after the CGI was done.

I have been thru the demo a few times now, mostly allowing my 5-year-old son to make the choices, and it is growing on me.

My DM, Olgar Shiverstone, has the full DVD and is previewing it before our game tomorrow, but I don't know if I can get there early enough.

There is a post from Erik Mona (I believe that's the spelling) where it is said that it is very accurate with respect to Greyhawk stuff... I'll have to look for the link (but it's in one of the other threads on this same topic)

I thought it was so cool that two days after I got the demo I ran out and bought the official version. Unfortunately I have been extremely busy at work and have only had a chance to play around with it for a few minutes but I think it is a cool idea. My wife finished it once and said that it leaves off at a point that hints that this is just a little piece of a big adventure. I don't want to spoil anything that happens but there are some cool monsters near the end. Overall a cool project I think. There is also a limited edition with 2 extra endings and 15 minutes of additional footage due out in the fall.
