Searchable SRD -- Is this worth it?

Aluvial

Explorer
I use a laptop for my game to aid in looking up spells, monsters, charts, etc.

I also have quite of few personal campaign files there.

How effective is the searchable SRD?

I have the SRD on the machine now, but I sometimes need to look for each piece of the puzzle and if you don't know exactly where it takes time. It is those times that you are better off looking in the index of the books themselves (not that that helps much most of the time)...

What are you experiences with the searchable version and who was selling it?

Thanks

Well, how much are you being charged and how much cash do you have?

Would I pay for it? No. I'd spend the money on a PDF. If I didn't have the rulebooks would I pay for it? Yes, in a heartbeat.

Although the SRD is about to see a revison pretty soon. You may want to hold off a month or two.

If I remember correctly, it was $7. I thought it might be nice to have a fully searchable SRD, and yes the new version is out, but I will probably stay with 3.0 for a while longer...

What do you mean by "fully searchable"?

Aaron

I suppose I mean that it has a function that if I type in Fighter, it gives me a list of relevant passages and charts in order of importance.

If I select ooze, for instance. It takes me to the creatures overview on oozes...

If I want Hold Person, it brings up the spell.

CHM files

I've got a CHM (windows Compiled Help file) of the SRD, and one of the AASB rules (see homepage). They both work great as reference tools.

Once the 3.5 SRD comes out, I'll probably spend a weekend setting those files into a CHM (and maybe even a mini-website for local viewing).

As for the thing that's on sale for $7--heck no, I don't think it's worth it. Maybe $2.50, IF they included the PDF and the original (Word?) file used to create it.

Hi Planesdragon, that sounds great. Where is your web site? I agree that $2.50 would have been more reasonable. As it stands now the PDF costs more than many other PDFs that contain original material.

EDIT: And by the way, I have the Modern SRD in PDF and Word format for free here: http://home.attbi.com/~kenji.baugham/

It's got a table of contents and is formatted in columns for ease of reading. I might do it for 3.5e too, but I'm not going to commit to it 100% yet.

CHM sounds great. Would you mind sending me a copy to look at?

I'm at aluvial@carolina.rr.com

I'm really not sure who put out the product or if it is a PDF, I just know that I saw it a month or so back, and wanted to know if it was worth it for play.

Thanks for responding,

I've got a pretty complete CHM version of the SRD on my site that I reformatted and compiled. Well, it's complete if you don't want monsters or magic items :) Otherwise, all classes and skill and such are there.

Go to the SRD section.

I'll eventually get around to doing a complete version of 3.5, but that is a lot of work and with my writing responsibilities it may be a while.

How difficult is it to add the remaining material? I would do it if it isn't too difficult.
