Searching for a Brutal, and Harsh Setting.

Nothing could be farther from the truth, actually. Oathbound is very harsh, very alien, and very very cool. When they say that you will be changed forever, they mean it, oddly enough in the best and worst possible ways... :)

BFG, Oathbound has many echoes of Planescape, which is why I like it so much, of course, it doesn't hurt that I got to help out with it's development either... ;)

It's a good setting Ashy/Brandon. I definately like it.

Oh and if you want some warhammer, well we do have Slitheren which can be construed by some as Skaven.

A dark, brutal, and harsh setting is all in background and the way the DM sets the game for the players! You have to make them think in trms like 'life is cheap', 'might makes right', 'he who laughs last has killed everyone else'. If you as a DM says the night is dangerous and deadly, you have to make it so!

Ways to do this?
Increase CR of creatues the party faces by 2 (could be more)
Increase the dangers of diease - Most DMs don't use everyday effects to disable characters.
Weather, make it a big concern!

I say Scarred Lands, Outbound, WFRP, or look to ways to make your players see the world at least fear the world.

I second that. I suppose you could do a decent d20 conversion if you expanded the disease rules a bit and removed magical healing (although I'd give the WHFRP rules a close look beforee deciding to go with d20. They do their job pretyy well)

Yeah, Warhammer Fantasy is good. In retrospect it is funny to look at the art and see how much 3e sort of resembles it. I love thier info on cities near the back. The idea that the kingdoms of men, dwarves and elves are big areas on maps is hilarious. WF essentially points out that people settle around cities and on the routes between them. So instead of being big clumps of land empires really look like latticeworks, for there is a difference in the land that a state claims and the land that a state controls. Following this gives you more "unknown" to play with.

Don't forget "He who dies with the most toys wins." and "If you die we split your stuff."

What?! The book isn't siazable and good for self defense?

We might have a mutual friend, do you live in the Seattle area?

Aaron.

Harnmaster, there are elves, dwarves and orcs several species.
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, medieval renaissance mix, but go to kislev(medieval russia, darmediavel ruussia) or the Mountains...
GURPS Conan, no player races beside human, but who said you couldn`t twist.
Glorantha and Runequest maybe?

Thank you Telfon Billy.

As I said before, I think the Scarred Lands fit the bill for a Harsh and Brutal setting. Hell I think Conan would enjoy trying to carve out a kingdom in Albadia and/or in the Titanshome Mountains...provided he lived long enough. ;)

a previous DM of mine made a very harsh and brutal setting of his own.. quite simply. .he made all of the cities in the starting region walled... and for a reason.. the country inbetween the cities.. was infested with things called "Hate Lizards".. basically velociraptors..just Outsiders...they would hunt in packs of three.. each of them was a CR 3 critter by itself..

O.. and every city was ruled by Dragons.. and everybody else was the Dragons slaves.. and Elves were their.. um.. favourites..so every other race hated Elves.. and Dwarves.. were outlawed.

So... all in all.. there was not a "safe" place to be.

fun though.

If the farmland outside the city was infested with dangerous monsters, how did people grow the food to feed the inhabitants of the city?
