Searching for a melee LA +1 race...

When in doubt go Scro for a +1

From the Beyond the Moons website

http://spelljammer.org/monsters/conversions/Scro.html

+4 Strength, +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Charisma.
A scro's base speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision out to 60 feet.
Scro use their Str modifier for their Intimidate skill instead of Cha.
Natural Weapons: Bite (1d3).
Orc Blood: For all effects related to race, a scro is considered an orc. Scro, for example, are just as vulnerable to special effects that affect orcs as their orc ancestors are, and they can use magic items that are only usable by orcs.
Automatic Languages: Orc, Elven. Bonus Languages: Common, Goblin, Giant, Draconic.
Favored Class: Fighter.
Level adjustment +1.

Great Warrior race at a plus one, not cheesy like the half-ogre either.

I'd also suggest goliaths. They're far better than half-giants. Okay, they don't get a couple of power points, but if you're not going to play a psychic warrior then those points are wasted anyway. Speaking about dwarves, duergar/gray dwarves are great. They have spell-like abilities (enlarge person and invisibility 1/day), immunity to poisons, paralysis and phantasms and 120 ft. darkvision plus the usual dwarf benefits. They have light sensibility, but if you're playing Forgotten Realms, then the Daylight Adaptation feat will cure that minor weakness.

It seems that many favour the Goliath race...and this is a race that I discounted when I first looked at the class. Forgotten that Half-Ogres got the shaft (or corrected)...in hindsight, Goliath looks to be a much better race after this correction...heh. I'll first look at that Illumian (sp?) race before I submit myself to the path of Goliath. One last question...anything interesting, meaning an interesting warrior race, from Races of the Wild?

I think some of the anthropomorphic whales are only +1 LA, but they are really cheesy!

The baleen whale, from memory, has 3 monstrous humanoid hit dice (which aren't too bad for a fighter) and no level adjustment.

It's awesome.

Any race that claims to be a Giant and only has a +2 to Strength is not worthy of the name. Not even a Half-Giant.

I'd go with Goliath myself.

Hehe our game group just switched the names for the half-giant and half-ogre and called it good! :p

The best choice is clearly the goliath. Powerful build, +4 str, +2 con...
Now that's a fighter/tank!

Easily the best choice hands-down.
Go with Goliath.

Scro? Are they supposed to be spelljammer´s orcs? thats a really lame name.... :)

By the way, frost dwarves from Planar Handbook are quite nice. They're like gray dwarves but have +4 Constitution instead of +2 and they have cold resistance 10. Okay, they have the extraplanar subtype, but I still think they're cool ;)
