Secret Campaign Worlds...

This is actually something I've never done but have been wanting to try for a while. I've gotten a bit bored with my traditional fantasy games, so I've been running a space opera (Reign of Discordia) game for a while. When I come back to D&D, and that will probably be in the next few weeks (wanting to try 4th edition and all that), this is probably the route I'll take.

Specifically, I'm probably going to run the Dungeon Crawl Classics #35 setting as a Points of Light game. The heroes won't know much about the world because they start out as simple folk from a simple town where they might know the name of a far away kingdom or some of the larger cities, but they will otherwise be ignorant. Their role up until now has been to work the fields and enjoy the protection of their lord.

What interests me about this approach is that the characters are the opposite of jaded. They're constantly scrounging around, looking for knowledge. They might even bump into a major antagonist without even knowing it.

I kind of just wonder how many people would "recognize" a campaign world if the names were changed and they never actually saw an "official" map...

I am working on a campaign that will pretty much keep the PC in a general area. They start out in a village where they do the normal PC things like fight patrols of orcs in the woods near their base village and go check out that haunted ruined keep.

As they finish clearing out the keep they come upon refugees from their home village. Orcs have attacked and burned down the village and they are headed this way.

Can the PC's organized a defense of ruined keep in time to turn back the horde of orcs? And after that what do they do with all these grateful villages who look to the PC's to guide them in rebuilding a new village around the keep?
