D&D 5E Sensing a rift growing between players

but there are times when the Fighter hid or went to some other room and did not help the group fight
My FLGS group has a player who keeps finding ways to wander off all by himself, or do something entertaining but non-helpful.

For one fight, he spent the first two turns doing pushups to impress the Team Monster leader. The guy figured it out and just ran away from him, and toward the rest of us. The Fighter decided to follow at a walk, cursing and challenging (but not shooting at) the leader all the way.

Why did you decide to unleash a Fireball in a confined space full of PCs?

Well the mech has to buttons one to engage the jump jets the other to shoot a fireball the first PC in the mech got the description and she decided not to push the unknown buttons and proceed to test the mechs speed strength in non destructive ways. The second player jumped in got the same description word for word immediately said "do i understand any of the symbols"i replied no then he said ok i turn to face the wall and push the right trigger so i couldn't have the fireball fly out the door or anything and boom

As a player, I would have shot him afterwards.
As a DM, I would have made him eat the full damage, no chance to save (telling him 'because it's right in your face').

But then, my tolerance of fools is getting absorbed by the fellow-player I mentioned just up-thread; and I'm approaching old age so I can get away with being crochety sometimes...

Well he himself took no damage the mech ate it all then used some of its power to repair itself so he just used up a limited resource. As for shooting him my gun was in parts from the cleaning earlier.
