[September] What are you reading?

Finished David Cronin's highly touted The Passage. Beautiful first third that sets up the world, but after the big event happens, the book lumbers about and throws a whole bunch of post-apocalyptic tropes out.

Also read Max Brooks World War Z. A very different take on the zombie apocalypse, examined through mainly political and social accounts. However, most of the voices in the book sound the same, and some parts became tedious. The zombies were also rather easy to kill. A pilot takes down 61 of them single-handedly, for example.

Malazan books of the Fallen ... just finished book 3, working on book 4.

Fringe benefit of being unemployed ... more reading gets done.

The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. Usual bunch of mini-cliffhangers as Robert Langdon goes on a find-the-next-clue chase all over Washington while pursued by government agents and the loony of the day. The book ends on a dreary, hokey new age lecture that goes on and on.

[sblock]I don't see how Langdon needs to be involved in the first place because the villain has the person who can provide the answer he needs all along. And that's just one of the main plotholes.

Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson

This! It was a little bit confusing at first, but worth slogging through the first 75 pages or so until you figure out the way the book was written. I'm only on about page 200 or so, though, right now. I only read about 5-10 pages a day normally.

I usually only get to read a few pages before bedtime, so I'm not flying through it. I've read Snow Crash before, so I knew what I was getting into style wise. It's very good, so far (page 150 or so).

Just finished Under Heaven by Guy Kay, another great book.

About 1/3 of the way through the Magic of Recluce, which seems interesting so far.
