Serenity/Firefly RPG - Anyone played it?

I would also use the Alternity system to run a Serenity/Firefly game.

This is for two reasons.

One, I don't like the system used in the book. It feels . . . wonky, for lack of anything else. I also don't like that even when an attribute is rated high, it can still roll as poorly as someone who has a low attribute. Sure, they could roll higher and their average roll is better, but as we all know, sometimes things hang on that one roll.

Two, I prefer Alternity. I am much more familiar with it and I think it would be fun. Further, I use Drama Points, from Eden, instead of LRPs, which I think would help to create that Firefly-esque game. Maybe I missed it but I didn't see anything like that in the game.
No offense meant, but you absolutly did miss it. And I don't know how you could have done it as they are a HUGE part of the game. The game has something called Plot Points. Pages 36, 37, 146, 147 & 148 talk about them. Plot Points not only allow you get more dice to roll thus letting you get a higher roll on a check; they allow you to reduce the damage of an attack; they also allow you to manipulate the game's story itself and are also needed/used and adjusted in some of the Traits. They are the single defining rule-set of the game that makes it as cinematic as it is, yet retain a certain level of lethality.

Sorry if this was too cryptic.

Have a good one! Take care!

PLOT POINTS. There is a whole chapter on them. You can use them to boost your die rolls, change a bit of the story (Spend a plot point Glad I keep I spare pistol clip in my coat pocket) Activate some Assets.

I'm hoping that Santa Claus leaves a copy of this game under my Christmas tree Sunday.

Of course it would be even better if he left some people to play the game with as well... :\

I just got this yesterday (an early christmas present from my bestest friend), and I am a bit enamoured of the system. Not so much the skills, but the Plot Points, and the Assets/Complications. I know most systems have these, but the ones provided were PERFECTLY suited to the Firefly/Serenity world. I also like the example crew they gave (not the crew of the Serenity, though they are present; it's the crew of the Aces and Eights, a slightly smaller ship with a slightly smaller crew). I especially heart Devil, their ship's doctor, who has no formal medical training, and is basically a con woman.

I played in a demo run by FCWesel and own the book. The demo was a blast, and I found the rules easy to use; they seemed to fit the setting quite well.

I will admit being of the opinion that Cinematic Unisystem could achieved the same ends, however. I'm sort of disappointed Eden didn't ge the license, despite MWP having done an excellent job.

Granted, an index would have been nice. :)

Well, I know I'm getting it for Christmas from my gaming group. So, I'm pretty excited about this week's session. From what I've read about the game, it looks similar to Savage Worlds, which is great because I've been really loving that game lately. The book looks very nice, and the Chinese-English dictionary will be a real bonus. I bought the Firefly DVD collection and thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I would love to rob the series for plots since nobody I game with has seen the series. The main problem I see with a Serenity RPG is the problem common to most sci-fi RPGs--the ship. Ironic, isn't it? The vessel is so prominent to the story, yet so vulnerable to one player characer's flubbed rolls. If the pilot messes up and the ship gets destroyed, it's game over. The entire party dies. I would rather do a sci-fi game with each character having their own ship, sort of a rogue squadron, but that eliminates the merchant/trader option.

My game the ship is basically a mobile base and home. The last thing they want to do is hurt it. The ship does not even have armor and cannons on it. How many times was Serenity shot in the show, once, twice. And it was just warning shot. The war just ended, seeing an armed vessle will draw unwanted attention. After playing Star Wars for so long it was hard to get rid of the Starship fighting thing. That doesn't mean the pilot doesn't do anything, ours is about to fly the ship through a twisting canyon while trying to board train so the crew can rob it.

Stripped down mechanics

I had the chance to run the game. And I will admit that my enthusiam for Firefly died on the vine of the Serenity RPG. I'm just not interested in a new "stripped down mechanic", I'd much rather have seen the game as d20 or something just OGL; instead they went the route of "fast and fun". I'll admit that not a lot of gamers of my age (30's) can find time to learn a new system, with jobs and families, but if I'm going to learn a whole new system I'd rather see some complexity! These are mostly directed at the overly simple skill system, the stats and the combat stuff. I did enjoy the fluff and the Plot Points.
