Serenity RPG - How is it?

How does the Serenity RPG from Maragret Weis Productions work in actual play?

Anybody able to give any first hand opinions, or point me at some detailed reviews. I'm more interested in hearing how the actual game engine and systems work rather than how useful the background fluff was - but that said, any and all information greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Why? Are you gonna run it?

:D
I'm thinking of it - having just picked up the rulebook from Amazon.

I've been threatening to run something with D20 Future for ages now, and have got about half an unstatted adventure/plot written up.

Given Neils hat of D20 knows no limits I figured this might be an interesting system to try which wouldn't scare him away from the table.

Oldhanan - many thanks for the links.

From my first quick read the rules appear quite flexible, much less focussed on the minutae and detail than D20, and quite reliant on GM handwaving and judgement calls. Looking good really :)

It's a heck of a lot more popular than MWP even imagined it would be. The games at conventions run by the designers, freelancers, and voiunteers have all been a lot of fun, and draw people into the setting quickly.

The game has had its critics, which I feel has been a good thing. A second printing got rid of a number of frustrations from some of those critics (they added an index, and a character sheet, for example) and the attention brought to it has encouraged discussion.

The same successful RPG engine is being used in the new Battlestar Galactica RPG, with a number of flavor tweaks (since the 'Verse isn't the same as the Galactica and the Colonies). It's become MWP's house system, and I think there are a lot of opportunities for further development in other games thanks to a very dedicated playtesting base.

Cheers,
Cam

Coolness. I have the book somewhere too. Love to play. And I think that you're up next anyway... :D
