"Serenity" SE-DVD question

Not to mention the loss of one of the better characters in the show (but severely hamstringed by the movie) :( I can honestly say that I'm not gung-ho on seeing a sequal like I was to see this movie. I understand the need to lose characters in movies occasionally, but to do it needlessly and without a reason for it to advance the storyline is silly. Imagine if R2-D2 just up and burst into flames from bad wiring in the first Star Wars movie
Personally, I'm not so hung up on R2 as many fans are. :]

But this particular topic is reserved for another thread found in this forum.

I totally agree John. It is totally a hard concept to sell in a few seconds. As the movie came out, I had not seen a single Firefly episode. I didn't go see Serenity either. Let me tell you want happened with my group of friends and I. A story I'm sure will get a few tomatoes thrown at me from fellow board members. :)
Nah, I'll just disagree with you.

The only thing I do agree, is that the Serenity film should have a better prologue, perhaps vocally-narrated by River herself.

Yes, this was about the DVD.

Yeah, but then the whole thread could have been one reply of "who knows". The original question has been answered.

At the moment there has not been any mention of a SE version, however it is possible that there will be sometime in the future but no one has a crystal ball that will predict this.

Now we can either let the thread die or discuss other things related (although very loosely) to the topic of Serenity/Firefly.

There are about 1,400 posts or so on whether killing that character was a good idea, and while no flames were generated, there was tension. Doesn't seem like it's worth running through it again.

The internet's flames glow too hot for even the most experienced hot coal-walker.

Interesting. Can you name a few shows you don't think look "cheap"?

Keep in my mind, this is entirely in my opinion (or cheapness standard which may vary from others): Star Trek: TNG , newest Battlestar Galactica.

What's your opinion on the look of Firefly (and the Serenity movie)?

Do you have some sort of information that Joss didn't allow the people with the Design, Decoration, and Cinematography credits do their jobs? From whence do you get the idea that Joss made those decisions?

Because he's the director.

Do I know how much input he had on the art direction? No I don't know...its mostly speculation. However, he is the director, the look of the project is also within his scope of responsibilities.

Whatever the case may be ...however it was handled, whether Joss was hands off or hands on....he is the director and has power over the art direction. Should he feel it isn't a certain quality, he can always say so and steer the team back to his vison. So , whatever happened during production, doesn't matter , the end result speaks for itself. Whether Joss had let the art team perform wihout his input or with lots of his input, in the end Joss still has the stamp of approval. Well, do be fair, the producers probably have their say too a bit, I'm sure.

Anyways, I don't normally like the visuals on a Joss project. But I do like the writing. And who knows what a new Serenity film may look like if it instead had a 100million budget rather that the reported 40 for the first one. Could be it still looks cheap becuase of Joss's leadership and tastes or....could be that you finally see his true vision of what he has in mind.....and that its actually pretty cool, just needed more money to do it right.

I can give you ST: TNG but it is over 10 years old, but the New Battlestar Galactica. Now I think it would be pretty expensive to build a real battlestar and vipers. They might not have to cash to build a cyclon basestar.

Now I'm dying to know what shows you don't find cheap.

Oh, and you are fully entitled to have that opinion, and I won't knock you for it. I'm just curious to see where you're coming from.

I think that, in both cases, the look is exactly what's called for by the genre. The Wild West was not a place of high production values. The thing is supposed to look shabby, because the universe it takes place in is shabby and ramshackle.

Interesting, though - you say it's his responsibility, but also want him to keep his hands off? Bit of a rock and a hard place, there.

I listened to many of the series DVD commentaries, and it seems to me the art and costume people were given a lot of freedom in design. The clothing styles, lighting, colors, and physical layouts were very specifically chosen for their effects.

Somebody at another forum posted that Universal has already decided to do a SE a few months after the first DVD comes out. I heard it from a guy on the internet so it must be true... ;)

And the budget for Serenity was 47 Million and the US take is 25,354,970 according to Boxofficemojo.
