setting search winner announced!

Is there a place where information on the 11 finalist's settings are detailed? I am kind of interested to see all the stuff that isn't under NDA. I think someone posted this before though, so sorry in advance.

Despite my much-touted "professional" status (from some of the posts I've seen, you'd think I was Monte Cook or Jonathan Tweet), I never really thought I had a chance. I'm very impressed that WotC really went through with the whole thing, and really did blind judge it. I've seen some excellent ideas among the one pagers that have been posted, and I certainly don't envy the judges for the choices they had to make. Personally, I want to see Mr. Toomey and Mr. Burlew's worlds, and really hope that WotC will do something with them in the future (and yes, they do own the rights to all the final round worlds).

Congrats to you, Keith (and to the other two semi-finalists!) it's an incredible accomplishment and I can't wait to read about the world you built. And I'll purchase Mr. Toomey's and Mr. Burlew's word in hardback, paperback, and or pdf form if they get published to. Congrats again. !

Just to chime in, congratulations again to you, Keith. I wonder if I can ask for a recount, I'm sure there are more votes from Florida somewhere...

At any rate, Wizards does indeed own my setting bible completely now, though it has been suggested by more than one WOTC employee to me that it would be very unwise for them to sit forever on something they paid $20,000 for. I hope (and believe) that it will make it to the light of day at some point, if only as a one-shot or something.

I'll be getting some lovely parting gifts: I'm already set to be working on one of WOTC's not-yet-announced books, and I'm in discussions with one of the most prolific 3rd party publishers to pen a sourcebook or two. (All still very top secret, naturally.) So it's been a great experience; not "$100,000 great" but still pretty damn fulfilling. :)

That's great news Giant! All the best. who knows? The work that you have now might become "$100,000 great" one day! :)

First, let me congratulate Giant in The Playground for making it into the finals, and his new career. I'm sure it was an incredibly tough decision for the judges, based on some of the stuff you've posted for free on the WotC boards.

Try these links for more information on those of us who made the second round, but not the third.

Three of us

More information on my setting, Morningstar (The name has changed slightly) can be found here:

My WotC BB Thread

Morningstar is going to be published. We have a contract, cover art and a good deal of the manuscript done as of now.

Rich, get together with the PTBs at Wizards and see about starting a small press imprint. Call it, say, "Playground Giant Press". PGP being the company WotC uses to publish your setting. Since it works for White Wolf it should work for Wizards of the Coast.

I actually do not think this would happen. The difference is, White Wolf paid WOTC for the permission to publish Ravenloft, AND assumed all of the publishing and distribution costs; it cost WOTC nothing. I don't have that kind of clout, though one can dream of the day when I do.

However, my Mystery World was not the only world I am capable of creating...I've got more than one idea in me, so I'm not overly concerned about the fate of my Setting Search world. Right now, I consider it work bought and well-paid for, and am moving on to my new projects.

Hmmmmm.......:D

What interest could you have in common with.....drum roll, please... Mongoose......?

Top secret did ya say? Nice to see that they went to da man.

Man am I going to feel like a schmuck if I have been wrong all this time.

No, Rich, more like the arrangement between White Wolf and Sword and Sorcery Studios. Playground Giant Games would be the publisher of record, with Wizards of the Coast acting as a sort of "fulfillment" house. Your setting would be an official D&D setting, in much the same way Kalamar is Kenzer and Co's official D&D setting, under a special arrangement with WotC. It could work.

An "imprint" of a publishing firm is essentially a division of the publisher dedicated to subjects the main division will not handle under its own banner. Black Dog was White Wolf's imprint for "adult" World of Darkness material. Necromancer Games is Sword and Sorcery Studio's imprint for a particular style of D&D material. So Playground Giant Games would be Wizard of the Coast's imprint for the publication of a D&D setting and its support material.

Are things clearer now?

Would any mole from Wizards care to weigh in on this subject?

Yes, and one free of WotC's rather rigid restrictions. Looking forward to it!

God, who else here can say, "I made 120,000 dollars from my RPG Hobby this year?" :)

Heck, there's not a large pool of people who can say, "I made 20,000 dollars from my RPG Hobby this year"...

On the other hand, those of us who can say, "I SPENT 20,000 dolalrs on my RPG Hobby this year"... :D

Congratulations to Keith & Rich (and Mr. Toomey, whose first name escapes me now)!
