There's no contradiction between deep RP and decent combat rules or other resolution systems involving dice rolling. You can have lots of both or not much of either.

I'm not sure why there is such a split between the two. My games have always been a mix of both. For example the players would spend says two hours role-playing to find the bandit camp...and then spend two hours attacking it.

I want level 2 + level 8 all combined together.

I disagree that more of one leads to less of the other.

Edit: Level 5 may be green and my level 2 + level 8 may be green, but my green is a vastly different green than the level 5 green.

I like my primary colors, and their associated, more subtle shades, to all proliferate in all their glory, not get muddled up into some kind of gray gruel at the bottom of the bowl. :D

I think some people are simply being difficult. Its clear to see that deep roleplay and combat simulation as the OP defined them are mutually exclusive. It is a rare event where you will be doing both at the same time in game.

I personally like a 3 on your scale with most of my time roleplaying and the rest taking part in combat which is a result of the roleplaying. I also prefer this ratio to be held during each adventure (not say over the course of many adventure).

I have had DMs who give us 5 minutes to "meet in a bar" and then another 5 to "go to scary dungeon" and then its all combat traps and riddles. This I would say is about a 7-8 on the scale leaning towards combat.

Maybe some people are. But we haven't given up hope that some of you will eventually come around. ;)

Begging the question never did get anyone closer to understanding. They are not mutually exclusive, nor as portrayed are they really the way everyone does them.

When you want a nice dinner, do you want it to be all steak, all chocolate ice cream, or a mixture of both, where 50/50 is a small steak with chocolate ice cream on top?

Well I prefer a big steak, and a average (smaller) portion of ice cream, so I would probably pick a 7 if all steak was 10 and all ice cream was 0.

My daughter on the other hand doesnt eat a lot of steak but loves ice cream, so she'd probably vote for a 3, have a couple bites of steak and a heaping bowl of chocoalte ice cream.

But the reason your example isnt comparable is that we can have an infinite amount of ice cream and steak, so that if I wanted a LOT of ice cream and a LOT of steak (a 5), I would be in the same category as someone who wanted a BIT of ice cream and a BIT of steak.

In a typical say 4 hour gaming session you have to decide what to spend it on, and you cant spend a unit of time speaking to the king AND in the dungeon fighting monsters to rescue the princess. In most cases you will have to spend a unit of time on one or the other.
