Sex and the Single Jedi

The whore will do what she does regardless if the jedi visits her. If the jedi does go and pays her the normal rate – perhaps even slightly above – he helps her out financially. I don’t think you can say that he’s prolonging a cycle of oppression because, as I said, she will do it anyway.

Ok, but there is morally a difference between tolerating something (because you cannot be personally responsible for everything that happens somewhere) and active participation.

But I actually think that your idea would be a good plot hook for the DM, if he agrees with you that a) it is not an outright violation of the Jedi code and b) that your group can handle it with some taste. You should just be willing to live with the consequences, which could include things like:

- bad reputation within the Jedi order (a Jedi has to learn to control his basic urges, a Jedi has to be an example for others, a Jedi has to be trustworthy - your character would walk a narrow line here, so he probably won't be sent on a diplomatic mission or made bodyguard for an impressionable young princess)

- bad reputation with upstanding citizens and being the laughingstock of the less honorable ones (better stay incognito!)

- being chosen for the dark side (a Sith might try to win your character as student, seeing how he gives in to his urges)

The potential for interesting and/or embarassing events is immense...

JH - thanks for the clarification, then. i know you play SWd20 alot, what is your take on my original thought? is it okay for a jedi to occasionally take company with whores?

Aaron - that is probably why there is no celibacy requirement. the jedis are perhaps expected to "spread their seed" far and wide, without worry. under the assumption, of course, that their progeny will be identified as jedi-worthy and put in the order at a young age. no need for fatherhood, the order does that.

Let me put it this way... I don't think the Jedi Council would look very kindly on one of their Jedi paying someone for sex.

But then again... Maybe there is a reason Shmi Skywalker has no recollection of getting herself pregnant.

[Jedi mind trick] "You never had sex with me." [/Jedi mind trick]

It wouldn't surprise me entirely if there were a lot of Force-sensitive bastards running around the galaxy.

Quite correct, he would walk a fine line. The way the character is set up, he is not a meteoric star in the order. He’s like a solid “B” student, the backbone of any school class. I would play the “visits” as discreet, but would not deny them if confronted. Mind you, it wouldn’t be a daily thing, fairly infrequent. It is also a great way to make contacts on Coruscant. I almost view it like Obi-Wan having a few drinks. Yes, they lessen his senses, but a small release (no pun intended) every so often does no harm so long as it doesn’t foster addiction or attachment.

i agree. note the "matter of fact" way that qui-gon questioned shmi skywalker. he certainly made it sound like jedis fathering children was not something new.

Let’s face it. Biology probably played a part in keeping the order alive for thousands of years. If you agree with that statement you then have to follow it through. As I said earlier, to seduce a woman knowing that he cannot give the woman the attention of a husband would seem to me to be devious and cruel. Worthy of darkside points. So what does that leave? To me, it means that occasionally, jedi would have to have casual sexual relations and, occasionally, impregnate certain women of “ill-repute”.

Have you considered that perhaps the Jedi have casual sex amongst themselves?

Interesting topic, considering I'm playing a rather wild female Jedi in an upcoming game. She's unlikely to go off and do the nasty with any random thing in the galaxy that comes along, but I don't think casual sex would be out of the question for her.

I don't think there would be casual sex within the Order itself, as there's too much risk for attachment when you see the person you had sex with day after day after day. But remember there are strong Force Sensitives NOT in the Order in the galaxy, and the Jedi no doubt keep track of the best stock regardless of whether their parents let the Jedi take them.

After all, if they would not be taken, perhaps their children will . . . .

Aaron's got a good point from a heredity standpoint -- taking the most powerful Force-sensitives of each generation out of the gene pool will lead to lesser quantity and quality of Force-sensitives in each succeeding generation.

might explain why there are only 10,000 Jedi in the entire galaxy...

the midichlorians thing might defray the heredity angle -- but the Skywalker family line is pretty strong evidence that Force-sensitivity is indeed inheritable.

i like JH's idea of the Jedi "keeping it in the family," so to speak. who better to trust to stay objective and dispassionate about a casual sex relationship than another Jedi?

hoo boy, i bet these are things George Lucas has never bothered to think about Jedi! :p

good point. you and Lily open up a can of worms there! for a male jedi it's well, pretty damn easy. wam bam thank you ma'am. now female jedi....wow. do they develop an attachment to their children? certainly in human physiology most women do - before birth.

why'd you have to go and ask that! :)

off hand, i'd say that it would be rare in that, it really would interfere with the female jedi's training/duties. it probably happens for sure, but i can't see alot of female jedis willing to take that responsibility on. i'm sure the female jedis could have casual sex like the male ones, but they probably use their force shield to keep from getting pregnant. ;)

I don't see Jedi engaging in casual sex much at all. I mean really, we have Anakin Skywalker, one of the most hot-tempered and rebelous Jedi in the history of the whole order, who's on his way to the dark side, and even he doesn't engage in casual sex with Padme. If any Jedi would be engaging in sex, it would be teen Anakin, yet all signs point to him staying celebate until his marriage.
