Well here is another example that popularity does not mean quality. I can't believe how many books Stephenie Meyer and R.A. Salvator have sold and how "little" G.R.R. Martin has.
Those aren't straight comparisons though. Meyer's books are targeted and marketed at a much larger audience than the others, and Salvatore has massively more books on the market.
