D&D 5E Shadow-based Magic

Hello everyone, trying to make a campaign and want to bring in some things from Fairy Tail anime, aka the Shadow Dragon Slayer. Just wondering what kind of damage would that be and would there be an kind of effects that shadows can have on a character?

I'd probably go with necrotic for shadow damage. If that doesn't fit for some reason, cold is my second suggestion, followed by force (pure magical energy) as a last resort.

Shadowy conditions might cause Exhaustion (be careful with that one, it's a real pain), or Frightened, or even Paralyzed if you want it to really wreak havoc on them.
