Shadowdark Class: Rr'Dzi Animator

Shadowdark doesn't have a pet class, and I really like pet classes, so I decided to try my hand at something. If you have any interest in checking it out and giving me feedback, positive or negative, see the attached document below!

Pillars of Design:
  • Jump off from the mount rules to create pet rules
  • Create a caster-and-minion that are OK on their own, but work best when intentionally working together
  • Create a caster that doesn't take the spotlight
  • Create a pet class where losing the pet is costly, but the pet master doesn't become useless after

Other Notes:
  • I used the Seer spellcasting progression because, per Kelsey, having less spells but full progression gives some wiggle room to make individual spells strong for their tier (on average)
  • I also used Seer progression because I figured less spells known would help balance out the benefits of having a dedicated minion
  • Most of the spells are balanced against the Seer list and are focused on buffing, also part of my goal to keep the spotlight off the guy with a minion
  • Most of the spells are designed to be usable on any creature, but have extra benefits when used on the minion to encourage unity between caster and minion while both are alive
  • Having weaker access to weapons and armor, as well as lower HP, than the seer was another attempt to balance out playing two characters at once, essentially

Have a great day!

It ended up way more work than I had predicted! If I hadn’t gone the caster route I’d have cut the amount of stuff to do by more than half… But this class needed totally new spells, cribbing off the Wizard spell mishap table wouldn’t really work, the existing golems in the core rulebook were way too strong to use as the golems the class gets, etc, etc, etc.

Really cool! I've read it over and think its pretty great, but have not looked at the numbers much. Great concept though.
