Shaman - are you an ally of your companion?

A lot of shaman powers read something like "each ally adjacent to your spirit companion gains XYZ". Does the shaman himself count as an ally of his spirit companion? Or does he not gain the benefit because it is actually his power and it doesn't read "you or one of your allies".

Thanks,

Nope. You are not an ally of your companion, because your companion, as a conjuration, doesn't count as a separate creature. The shaman is the "source" of all the spirit companion powers and actions, so it is based on the actual shaman.

i agree with lukelightning, as odd as it might sound: you are not an ally to your spirit companion. you conjured this mass, but it isn't a creature merely an extension/exertion of your own power.

The way the power is worded doesn't make it the spirit using the power - it is still the PC. Being adjascent to the spirit is merely a targetting condition - it doesn't make the spirit the user of the power. Therefore, any reference to "ally" or "enemy" refers to allies/enemies of the PC, not the spirit.

Every rule question involving the spirit companion is answered with a simple mantra:

'A spirit companion is not a creature.'

And the reason for that is:

'Powers and effects are not creatures unless they say they are.'

Yeah, this came up recently in our game. Much to the Shaman's frustration because he was in desperate need of healing at the time.

My almost-complete inability to benefit from my shaman's own abilities led me to draw comparisons to Dr. Facilier a few weeks back:

"Fun fact about voodoo spirit magic: can't do a thing for myself."
