share spells with Animal Companion-question

Its the magic effect being shared not the means of its casting - so in all cases, the answer is: yes.
Okay, so how about wondrous items? If a wizard uses Keoghtom's ointment on himself, is his familiar cured, too? If he reads a manual of quickness of action, does his familiar also gain an inherent bonus to Dexterity? If he wears a robe of the archmagi, does his familiar gain a +5 armor bonus to AC, +4 resistance bonus on all saving throws, and spell resistance 18?

If its the magic effect that's important, and "not the means of its casting," wouldn't all of those work, too?

The rules are describing what happens when you use a wondrous item, potion, scroll, and wand. If you would cite them, we could figure out how each is treated when used.

There's an old Rules of the Game article that touches on (though does not explicitly address) this issue, and in it I saw this:

"You and your animal companion can share effects from magic items only if the effect is a spell that you can target on yourself. For example, you and your animal companion can share a barkskin spell cast from a wand, but cannot share the armor bonus from bracers of armor."

The article is located at Rules of the Game: Animals (Part Four)

Given the givens, I don't see potions as being any more abusive than other forms of spell sharing. The problem with RAW is the inevitable parsing of words and phrases. My advice is don't worry about the RAW, worry about making your game fun.

Even if wands were ok, it's still not enough to include potions necessarily. Wands and scrolls are at least spell trigger and spell completion items. You need to be a caster and have the spell on your spell list to use them, or else use UMD. IMO, it's possible to allow wands and scrolls to be shared (though I'm against it), but potions have nothing at all to do with spell casting. Ditto for use activated items.
