Shared Class Features

A D&D assassin should be refluffed into people trained in various methods of killing others and the surrounding abilities needed to get to the kill; information gathering, stealth, bypassing traps and wards, opening locked doors, indentification of people and place, tracking, and disguise.

That way players can create hunters of a faith's enemy, a king's counterassassin, a VIP's secret security, crime fighters who cannot risk being known publicly, a protector that deals with threats that cannot be dealt with fairly, and of course hired killers.

Sounds like a 3e rogue with some feats, to me. I mean, call yourself an assassin if you want, but....

It's not like an assassin class will keep me from buying the game, though.

I still quite perfer the assassin as the "made a deal with dark powers for special death magic" to the "trained killer" trope.

That's how I prefer something like that too. Basically an assassin is trained by an order of assassin, the dark side of a clergy, or a dark power to learn assassination skills and deadly magic.

My preferred version of a custom assassin base class in 3E was a full BAB, d6 HD class that a DM once allowed for his friend. He could power attack you to death, sneak attack you to death, death attack you to death, or acid arrow you to death. 100% glass cannon.

It basically had the ranged touch attack spells added to its spell list. It could also cast disintegrate once a day at ~level 15. Disintegrate + Death Attack + Max Hide/MS = 2 SoDs, a nice chunk of damage, and a dead corrupt noble/demon cult leader on the floor of his bedroom.
