In the old days, with a very limited selection of adventures available, there was a community built around Tomb of Horrors, Keep on the Borderlands and the Village of Hommlet.
Today, with a very limited selection of adventures available...
That's not quite true. There are, in fact, many adventures available. Not only current ones, but the old 1e and 2e ones that can be found.
I've observed a certain shared experience with the Dungeon magazine adventure paths (esp. Age of Worms). I'm not so sure that the newer official D&D adventures fill that role.
For a true shared experience, it's likely that the adventure needs to not only be good, but also to be available over an extended period of time. (Consider how long the Keep on the Borderlands was available).
Cheers!
