Okay, so I have something of a love for television. Accept it and move on.
Here's the game:
Law & Order shows are all set in the same universe. They have crossovers, they make references to events on the other shows, and s on. So I can link:
Law & Order
L&O: Special Victims Unit
L&O: Criminal Intent
I can ALSO link Homicide: Life on the Street, because of crossover episodes between L&O and Homicide -- and because of Detective Munch, who crossed over from Homicide to L&O.
Now we begin to branch out a bit.
Anyone remember the episode of X-Files where the Lone Gunmen have their origin story? I believe that Richard Belzer is in that episode, but I can't remember whether or not he plays a younger version of Detective Munch. If he did, that would let me link X-Files (and Lone Gunmen) to the shared universe.
And if I get X-Files, I get Picket Fences, because there was a planned crossover episode between the two shows -- Mulder & Scully were going to show up and investigate some weird stuff in Rome, Wisconsin. The deal fell through, but Kelley never changed the dialogue in PF -- it's clear that when he says, "And these events happened, and these events happened, it's documented," that he believes they happened in real life -- which means that X-Files and Picket Fences exist in the same television universe.
And Picket Fences also crosses over to Chicago Hope -- one of the kids goes down to Chicago Hope for an operation. In that same episode, there's a snarky reference by the mom on Picket Fences. She says, "Maybe we should have taken him to the other hospital in Chicago," a clear reference to the other TV show set in a hospital in Chicago -- ER. The doctor says something like, "We don't like to talk about that one." It's a stretch, but you can assume that, based on that discussion, ER takes place in the same fictional universe as Chicago Hope, which means that ER is connected to Picket Fences is connected to X-Files is connected to Homicide is connected to Law & Order.
Can anybody help me out with the Richard Belzer bit? Or add new shows? I'm not interested in mere "guest star" shots -- I'm interested in actual character or concept crossovers. I know that Ally McBeal crossed over with the Practice, and the Practice crossed over with Boston Public, but I can't get them connected with my major universe set as of yet. I'd love to find a connection there -- even if it's just one actor playing the same character in both shows. If Douglas Wambaugh (the character from PF) showed up on Boston Public, that'd be a slam dunk. Except that the actor who played Wambaugh already played another person on that show, right? Darnit.
Anyway. Help! Legions of geeks will thank you for your assistance!
