But if you're a third level caster, you may not be able to break that iron grappling hook. And if the rope is just tied to something big and sturdy, you definitely won't be able to break it.

Why wouldn't you? I'd consider the hook to weigh under 30 pounds, and I would consider the rope and whatever it's hanging off of to be separate objects for the purposes of shatter.

Nevermind, I was under the impression that the spell did a flat d6 per level sonic damage to items, not just flat out destroyed the item. Of course, if the rope is tied to a pillar, you'd better go for the rope.

Also, the 3.5 shatter specifically states that you can target a single solid object, regardless of composition. So you can hit a rope with it.

Erm, I just figured Shatter didn't work on liquids and gasses. :/

If I wanted to sever a rope somebody was climbing from afar, I'd just cast Mage Hand and give it a knife rather then using a sonic attack...

But that's just me.

Except that Mage Hand can't make an attack, even against objects.
