Shield Maidens Kickstarter - April 1st 2pm GMT

Freya calls you to action!

The Shield Maidens RPG begins on Kickstarter at 2pm GMT on April 1st - less than a week to go. You can find the pre-launch page right here:

The nine realms are dying. Only the Shield Maidens can save them now.

You are a daughter of Freya, blessed by the divine. It is your task to free Yggdrasil from the tyrannical forces that control the greatest source of power: Ymir’s Blood. Elves have been ripping worlds apart for it, and Fenrir is killing Midgard with their constant drilling. The lifeblood of worlds is almost spent, and the Shield Maidens are the only thing that stands between the spring and fimbulwinter. You will meet all manner of mythical and technological figures throughout your journeys on the Bifrost, and you alone can save them.

Shield Maidens brings Vikings and cyberpunk together, melding to form a Norse inspired science-fiction tabletop roleplaying game. This Kickstarter project is funding two hardback books - the Shield Maidens Training Guide and the Shield Maidens Gamemasters Guide.

We will have a free-to-download primer allowing you to create your own Shield Maiden on the Kickstarter page when it goes live, so you can dive right in and see how the system works. You can also be sure to see regular previews throughout the Kickstarter process.

Hope to see you there!

Coming up with some fresh ideas and a whole new array of equipment and vehicles is great fun for any designer – but it can also be quite challenging.

Every Shield Maiden is already very much in sync with her Guardian Shield, but even though each Galdr is unique and each hub has its own properties, most players would find having only one kind of weapon to choose from to be severely limiting… but a game also needs to keep up its suspension of disbelief in order to be as immersive as possible and how do you justify the in-game logic of carrying around anything other than a Guardian Shield? After all, there’s almost nothing in the nine realms more powerful or versatile.

Even though it took them decades of research, Shield Maiden weaponsmiths were able to build a series of conduits that allows a weapon or other piece of equipment to draw energy from a Guardian Shield. In game terms, this means the wielder of such a weapon can add the Shield Dice and number of runes to the damage, and armour also benefits from runes. This allows for a more varied arsenal… which makes the Shield Maidens even more of a feared and extremely adaptable foe.

The Shield Maidens Kickstarter begins this Friday!

Just two days to go before the Shield Maidens Kickstarter launches!

It's not a coincidence that the cyberpunk genre pays a lot of attention to criminal organisations. After all, the genre is partially defined by disparity: between high tech and low life, between humans and megacorporations, between wealthy and poor, between those who are informed and those who aren’t. They’re all common cyberpunk tropes, as is a grey morality (at least amongst the citizens and their society).

In Shield Maidens, some gangs operate out in the open, whilst others – like the DeFionn family – act more like a covert crime syndicate. The balance of power often shifts, leading to fierce conflicts, territorial wars and other disputes. Despite the violence they so often bring, gangs sometimes succeed in seducing Resistance members into membership – much to the embarrassment of the Resistance. The Shield Maidens are often called upon to act as peacekeepers. It may not be their primary mission, but it is a job that comes with the responsibility of wielding so much power that to turn a blind eye would be a tough decision to defend.
