D&D 5E Shillelagh question

If you read a bit more carefully, it says that you add wisdom to attack AND damage rolls, so with shillelagh a club/quarterstaff becomes 1d8+wis weapon.
only few spells add damage such as paladin's smite spells, or clerics divine strike class ability obtained at 8th level. but those add their damage to attacks anyway, with or without shillelagh.

If you wanna be a stickler, it doesn't strictly use Wis as the attack & damage stat, it says that your spellcasting stat becomes the stat used for attack & damage rolls. A Warlock who learns Shillelagh via Pact Of The Tome uses Charisma to cast it, not Wisdom. Something I'm very much looking forward to soon. :)

Essentially, the spell allows you to replace STR with your spellcasting stat (WIS for Druids and Nature Clerics and anyone who picks it up via the Magic Initiate feat, CHA for Bards and Warlocks if they pick the cantrip up through class features). That makes your spellcasting stat a combat stat for one minute for that small set of weapons for the cost of a bonus action.

Don't forget the quarterstaff's Versatile quality, so you can Shillelagh it up two-handed for more.


For more what? I don't think shillelagh does 1d10 damage if cast on a staff and used with two hands.

One handed, clubs normally do 1d4 and staves do 1d6, but shillelagh just changes them all to 1d8 + casting stat.

There's also the subtle benefit that you are now armed with a weapon, meaning you can make opportunity attacks, benefit from the extra attack feature, and the like.

The material component for the spell is a weapon, either a club or quarterstaff, so the spell itself doesn't create anything additional for you to be armed with.

You don't actually need a weapon for those things.
 

I have always thought that the staff gets shanghaied by Shillelagh. Who, honestly, equips their adventurer with a club? Bobby the barbarian from the d&d cartoon aside. It's gonna be a staff, isn't it. So Shillelagh just swaps out your STR for your casting bonus. Meh. Weaksauce. House rule chez nous is staves do 1d8/10 with Shillelagh or 1d6/8 normally (figure in parentheses is two handed). Every other versatile weapon does more damage two handed, so why not a staff?
