Hey folks,

I was in Louisville this morning for a story and stopped at one of my favorite gaming-related stores, Book and Music Exchange on Prescott Highway. They have a huge selection of used and discounted games. Anyway, I picked up Sidewinder, the Wild West D20 game I mentioned a while back. Much of the book is lifted right out of D20 Deadlands, so much of it looks pretty darn familiar. But it also has some feats, abilities and combat rules that I will want to lift, pretty much intact for Deadlands. In fact, I will probably lift the combat chapter entirely for Deadlands (which should be easy, since much of it is lifted right out of Deadlands in the first place.)

But, just a sample of the rules that I think I will use:

1) Each character class gets a Bonus to AC called Sidestep. Sounds like a good idea to me.

2) Guns are lethal. If someone gets shot while they are flatfooted (i.e. when they can't Sidestep) each hit is treated as an automatic crit. Also, after getting shot, you have to make a Fortitude check or you are treated as fatigued.

3) They call Hit Points... Grit Points. (chuckle)

4) It does a better job explaining how gun combat works than Deadlands does and lists some specific modifiers for gun combat.

Anyway, we'll use the Deadlands classes for PCs, but some of the NPCs may use Sidewinder classes also.

Anybody planning on playing one of the spell-using classes? Such as a Huckster, Blessed or such? There are some special rules on spell casting that I will share with those folks, but if you aren't a spellcaster, than that's all a bunch of hocus pocus and mumb jumbo anyway. 'Taint real, I tell ya.

So... later tonight, setting info, combat chapter and some more feats to choose from.

And just to point out, Deadlands and Sidewinder are both older games, so they use the 3.0 rules instead of 3.5. I don't see any immediate problems with that, but just wanted everyone to know. (And fwiw, Sidewinder: Recoiled, available now as a PDF and this fall from Green Ronin, uses the D20 Modern rules instead of D20.)
