Shooting a spell in the distance

And you think there'd be no difference between your ability to point accurately at something five feet away, and something five hundred feet away? :)

If I were a 10th-level wizard capable of casting such a spell in the first place, I don't think that would be too far out of the realm of imagination. :-P

Where is it written that the ray follows the line coming directly out of your finger?? Sure the spells have somantic components... and pointing is part of it, but maybe the spell shoots what you see... and you are just pointing because the spell's creator thought it was a really funny image to have all of the future users of his spell... shooting poeple with their fingers. ;)

Just about every Ray spell has some sort of description saying where the beam comes from- it's often your finger, but sometimes your whole hand (which, in my opinion, would be harder to aim than just a finger).
