shooting at invisible/into darkness

How do folks handle this? One is supposed to "guess" which square the enemy is in to attack him if invisible. So if an archer wants to shoot at an invisible foe, they just plink their finger down on a square, and if the enemy is there, then they get a roll with the usual penalties? What if they plink their finger down on the square behind the target?

If we have an idea it's there, just not officially sure exactly, we just did a d6 for which square to randomly attack in (for melee). Maybe you could try something like that?

You need to pinpoint (i.e. Listen) or guess the correct square, otherwise the attack misses automatically.

A successful listen check will tell them that something is sneaking around "over in this direction," as will a Spot check vs. DC 20.

That way, the players aren't completely guessing blind.

Pun intended! :D
