D&D (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

This implies that being aware can make you worse at searching for someone than when not being aware because you always can roll subaverage.
Nah, it just means that you can actively use your action every round as opposed to just getting the initial check. I always default to the passive check as a minimum but that’s just me. Unless they’re doing opposed rolls.

I mean problem in the sense that this issue seems to take up a lot of real state on the boards.
When I’m DMing I just look at the map and make decisions. I’m never going to messer square corners and diagonals etc and debate game theory.
But then facing not being a part of the rules makes it even easier to make decisions as a DM? One less thing to worry about.

This is what I plan to implement in my game. It is more generous than the 5.5 rules but I want characters to be able to use their stealth if they have invested in it.

HIDING RULES

When you are hidden you cannot be detected by sight or hearing, although creatures with other senses might be able to detect you. You cannot be targeted directly by spells or other effects but the space that occupy can be targeted via area of effect spells or sheer luck.

You can attempt to become hidden by making a Stealth check as long as you are obscured or have cover. The Stealth check is made with disadvantage if you are only lightly obscured or have less than 3/4 cover. The check is compared to another creature's Perception check or Passive Perception score depending on if the creature is actively searching for you. You remain hidden until immediately after you meet one of the conditions that negate the hidden condition or require another Stealth check.

Conditions that automatically negate the Hidden condition:
1. Attacking
2. Casting a spell with a Verbal component.
3. Making any noise louder than a whisper
4. Ending your turn in an area with no cover nor obscurement
5. The DM decides you no longer meet the conditions to remain hidden.

Conditions that require another Stealth check:
1. Moving more than half your speed
2. Moving through an area with no obscurement or cover.
3. Ending your turn in an area that is lightly obscured or where you have less than 3/4 cover (made with disadvantage as per above).

My turn my turn!

Hide:
With the Hide action, you try to conceal yourself. To do so, you must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity (Stealth) check while you're Heavily Obscured or behind Three-Quarters Cover or Total Cover, and you must be out of any enemy's line of sight; if you can see a creature, you can discern whether it can see you. A distracted creature may not have line of sight to you even if it normally would.

On a successful check, you are hidden. Make note of your check's total, which is the DC for a creature to find you with a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Hidden: while hidden from a creature, it is not aware of your location. It is possible to be hidden from some creatures and not others. You also have the Invisibility condition while hidden.

You stop being hidden immediately after any of the following occurs: you make a sound louder than a whisper or cast a spell with a Verbal component; you make an attack roll; an enemy finds you using the Search action or Passive Perception, an enemy moves into your location, an enemy has unblocked line of sight to you during its turn, or other situations the DM judges appropriate.

...or you cast a spell with Somatic components in armor or clothing that inflicts Disadvantage to Stealth checks. :D
